Default 993 defrost button question

I've had my 993 for 5 years and I'm just now getting around to asking this question. When I hit the defrost button to kick on the a/c compressor, the fan always runs at full speed. Is this the way the system is supposed to work?

Thanks in advance for any guidance you all can give.

Yes, as in most cars, pushing the defrost button kicks the fan into high speed. It also closes all other HVAC vents and directs all air to the windshield. This is necessary in order to clear the windshield in as short a time as possible so the driver's vision will not be obscured... Pg 78 of the Owner's Manual contains a description of the function of the defrost button.
