Looks like a bad alt, has anyone had to replace one recently and how much shop time to replace? Thanks for help!

Two hours max shop time. Probably could R&R in half of that time.

My local wrench said the part is very expensive - and together with labor he would predict at least $500.

In July my local independent Porsche mechanic charged me $1,037 to supply and install a new battery and alternator. Labor was about half the cost.

I don't think he has a boat, but he has a Ducati, a wife that doesn't work and three kids

You know... I've thought about switching, but here's my problem. There are three independent Porsche specialists in my area that I know of. Two of them totally screwed over a friend of mine who was price shopping because he was fixing up his 928 on a budget. The shop I use is the only one who has been straight up.

Any Northern VA/Metro DC folks have any suggestions?

Just did my first and I've done extensive work on other porsches. Took me maybe five hours with screwing around; imagine a skilled mechanic that has done it before could do it in two hours EASY. That said an alt job charge is probably like three or four hours in their book. so $300 to $400 labor is probably not crazy.
