Default Airbox upgrade - Give me your results/Opinions.

I'm looking at the FabSpeed Cup Air Box. It's the only one I have seen totally open.

What have I not seen, and what have you experienced after the install?

I'm not expecting a large increase in HP. But would like the best improvement possible. What else is out there?

I have yet to be convinced that these kinds of mods do anything but make more noise, however, I have seen one installed in a friends 993 and the fit and finish was excellent.

If your after some induction noise, cut open a factory box - the frame work will seal the air filter much better than that of the Fabspeed unit. Plus you'll save yourself some money.

I am not certain there is any other benefit.

I drilled several (6-7) 1" holes in mine. The open or drilled airboxes do nothing for hp, but they sound great at WOT.

TheOtherEric did some Fabspeed airbox testing using his DAS as a measurement. IIRC, he picked up about 3-4 horsepower. FWIW, I have an open airbox on my car.

I was thinking about doing this same thing. I read about it in Adrian Streather's - Porsche 993 The Essential Companion.

Good to know.

Here's my drilled stock airbox lid. Sounds as good as the Fabspeed I had on my RSA and it fits much better.

You can find a stock lid on eBay for $25-40 and save your original. Way less money than the $175 Fabspeed. A hole saw kit at Harbor Freight is $11.

Here's what I did to my airbox lid. Sounds great at WOT, but I can't seem to hear it as much since FisterD did the LPMM on my mufflers!

Best part was that it's free... if you already have the hole saw.

I've cut an original airbox cover to obtain exactly the same as the Fabspeed (Dremel is your friend)... at a very lower price.
I've not noticed any hp increase.
But for the sound, it's an other story ! It sounds as usual when revving at low rpm, but at WOT, it howls as a race car.
Great improvement if you don't need to talk with your passenger !

A drilled airbox will give you a decibel increase, but not a horsepower increase.

The Motorsound cover has all the holes you'll ever need plus has the chromed horn, which looks nice. About $85. As with all the others, no increase in HP, but you get the better OEM fit.

from marc shaw's experiment... it stands to reason why Porsche's motor sound air box has only small holes drilled into it. hot air kills HP. There is no free HP.
