A drilled airbox will give you a decibel increase, but not a horsepower increase.

FWIW,...We've measured a 2-3 HP increase on our engine dyno with the holes drilled in the airbox cover but I don't think anyone can tell that difference.

I haven't noticed any water issues with my current setup. It's been on the car for a year and a half.
It looks like water intrusion on a cut open lid would be an issue if the car is 'sitting' outside while it's raining. It's literally a straight shot through the grill down to your air box. During a heavy rain water is going to get down there - just look down into your engine grill sometime. These engines are designed to allow a thorough soaking and not impact the electrics, etc. Alternatively, stop and go traffic during rain might be an issue. Mabye a Porsche engineer can say definitively.
