"the dealer firmly indicated that the last 4 digits on the lower right of the paper label with 993 618 159 02 as the header .... were the initilization code."

That's correct, i.e. That's where the removeable paper tags are located
before there're removed on a NEW immobilizer.

OK - appears that there is correctness in both accounts : my spare removed from a '96 parts car still had an ~3x2" Bosch label attached - with no indication of a removable tag/ separation line. As it appeared original ( no marks on the mounting fasteners), one may assume it left the assembly line that way. The rest of the story will be left to Sherlock Holmes .... maybe it was missed on a fri aft Stuttgart beer break, maybe they missed a great number ....

My understanding is that there is a peel-off sticker that you're supposed to remove from a new immobilizer and stick in your user manual.....is that what you're referring to?? If you get the immobilizer back (with the 4 digit code!) I would gladly take it off your hands (and would pay handsomely for it as well!).
Cheers,
Ron
p.s. I'm in Ottawa.....sometimes I feel like I'm in a "remote corner" as well

Garth,

Was it the number with the arrow in the picture below that the techs were interested in? If it isn't the number to use to program the remote, what number would be used to look up the code for a given immobilizer box?

That's the one
Dealers can retreive the code via the VIN .... AFAIK .... as long as there was no replacement made. I do not know if the PST2 can read the code from an installed module.

"I do not know if the PST2 can read the code from an installed module."

There's no PST2 communications with the immobilizer, only with the alarm ECU.

Also, there's no information on the immobilizer which can be used to obtain
the programming four digit code once the paper tags are removed.

Thanks Loren - I had the same conversation with the dealership this AM.
On the clients car I had earlier mentioned, they had to remove the door panels to manually move the locks off of the 'sweet spot' that kept the immob. light flashing. Once past that roadblock, the key reprogramming was successful.

As an aside, I jacked up the seat on my car, and the full ID label is on the immobilizer module, secured under the OEM steel cover with blind headed fasteners. The code is there - but someone would have to really make an effort to view it
