Default Cab top transmission P/Ns

I am completely and utterly confused by the part numbers on cab top transmissions for 993 cabs.

The transmissions are now sold with cable, so '95s should be different numbers than '96-98s (shorter cable). Is this assumption correct?

Can someone definitively tell me the part numbers for '95 transmissions and '96-98 transmissions, please?

Thanks in advance!

I didn't realize that 95s were different, but it does have a different part number from the 96s in the PET. These are the numbers shown for the 95 cabrio in PET for the transmission: left 993 561 045 00 and right 993 561 046 00.

96 is left 993 561 045 03 and right 993 561 046 03

Thanks, Chet! Will look into this further.

Do they show cables separately? What numbers for '95? Are left and right cables the same?

Also, 993 561 046 01 70B would be from what side and what year?

They do show cables separately. I bought a pair of cables a year ago for $182 each. The cables come with the worm gear attached, and the worms might be threaded in opposite directions. I don't remember for sure, but they are different part numbers. Left 993-561-921-03, right 993-561-922-03. In the case of the cables, these for the 95 end with 03 and the ones listed for 96 end with 02. That seems strange.

My PET doesn't show a 993 561 046 01.

PS The 70B shows up on the next line after the part number and says black. I'm not sure why it does that since there don't appear to be any other color options available. Also, I don't know if this holds across the board, but it seems like left side parts are odd in the last 3 digit segment and right side are even.

Took my driver's side transmission out today. The transmission itself is 993 561 921 67 (made in '92, actually, so some 964s used the same part?).

About two years ago I bought a 993 561 045 03 cable from a fellow Rennlister. So it appears to be the right combo. The cable came with worm gear and also a brass round gear that, I assume, is the tranny replacement gear?

When I attach the cable to the transmission the entire assembly is way too wobbly for my taste where the cable is going in. I also now need to somehow re-align the arm with the half-moon gear inside.

Looks like I'll be sending the whole damn unit to someone in California who seems to know what they are doing. Hopefully they do and hopefully they can assemble and align the entire damn thing for me.

If it makes you feel any better, my top went haywire and I stressed all weekend trying to get it aligned - without success. I used the pcar.com methods.

I took it to a local top guy and he fixed it in an hour with new cables. I think it was $500 total and it works perfectly now. Ask the independent shops for the name of a local top expert. The thing that surprised me about his is that he knew the 993 top very well as well as about every other kind of convertible.

Patrick, I've already gone through that when looking for a person to replace my top a year ago. None of them in Boston area really know what they are doing on a 993, as far as I can tell. Although recently I got a lead on one guy who might be better at it than others. We'll see.

The issue is not a roof alignment for me at this point. The issue is putting the second tranny back together internally and getting it to work through the entire roof travel.

Mike, I wish you were in Dallas! My guy opened up the transmission while I was watching and completely knew what he was doing. If you would like, PM me and maybe you can talk it out with him.

Patrick, thanks! If California guy can't get it done, I might make a deal and send my transmission to your guy to put together for me and pay him for it.
