Default Do Your Carbon Fiber Trims turn Yellow?

Hi,

I don't know how many of you read/follow this thread in the CGT forum.

https://rennlist.com/forums/porsche-supercars-carrera-gt-918-960/364648-yellowing-carbon-fiber.html

The pics of the yellowing CF are definitely troubling. I am not a big fan of CF and do not have any CF trims (interior or exterior) in any of my cars. But I have seen quite a few cars with heavy CF trim work (ala the 993ttS). I have never heard comments on CF turning yellow until I read the thread I cross-posted.

So my question, do any of you have CF internal trim pieces turn yellow? Or is this an issue exclusive to the CGT.

The new E90 M3 has a CF roof (unpainted). It'd be interesting to see how that roof holds up in the sun over time.

CP

I have yet to see an OEM CF steering wheel that doesn't have at least a few small cracks. After my car gets out of the Paint shop, I was considering CF interior pieces as my next trip down the slope. I may have to re-think that now. Anyone with who has had the CF interior bits from Marcus for >1yr+, please chime in and post your experience.

Pong, I saw that thread on the CGT forum, and I would be livid at Porsche's lack of backing the customer.

Yellowing CF stuff is merely UV damage to the clearcoat, or resin if the item isnt post cured clear coated. It can be sanded and reshot. Most clearcoats have UV protective properties. Applying wax to these items can also help reduce this sort of damage.

Hi gentlemen,

my 993 is from 96 and all interior panels are made of carbon fiber from the "Exclusive" department from Porsche AG. No yellowing at all of any of those panels. Of course Belgium is far from being a "Sunshine state", but when UV's are burning my skin, they had so far no effect on my car CF panels.

My factory option TT shifter and parking brake CF still look like new. Its parked inside so that probably helps.

Default No Yellow

I have a CF steering wheel, shifter, brake handle and door handles (on my 96 993) and they look like the day I got them.

Hmmm... Sounds like interior trim pieces in our 993 hold up very well.

According to his thread, Alex said he documented 41 CGTs with the CF issue. If the yellowing happens mostly in the CGTs, then it's truly bad luck for Porsche and their utmost high-end owners.

I use "303" sunscreen for carbon; spays on.. Carbon epoxy will definitely yellow, unless some UV stabilizers are added to the epoxy.. Best to keep it out of hard sunlight and use some sort of sunscreen for it..

Coleman.

CP and all, FWIW, I would take about 50% of what this "gentleman" says with a grain of salt.
Search on his username in this forum.

That said, yeah, it looks like they have some serious manufacturing issues. That part is clearly true. Disconcerting on a car at this level.

I have a bucket full of CF coming with my November TT. Not concerned.

1. Problem appears so far limited to the CGT.
2. If it did happen on a 99X, they can pull from a relatively large spares bin.
3. I have good luck with my Porsche purchases, as long as they are some variant of red.
