Targa v Cab v Coupe
Hi all,
I am looking at a 1997 993 Targa with 70k miles in Los Angeles for 29k - auto with tiptronic (6 sppeds are great but not in LA traffic...).
It is black (I know its hard to keep clean) and in IMPECCABLE condition.
It has been babied its whole life and serviced by the same specialist most of its life and comes with every receipt since new.
It is a beautiful car and I am happy with the price but wonder how Targas hold value compared to cabs and coupes???

Fist of all, welcome to the list!
This has been hashed quite a bit (do a search!!) and the values/prices are too unpredictable because of the factors involved (age, mileage, model, color, options, condition, want....). As in all sales its what the market will bear and how much someone wants something. It seems that Targa's might fetch a bit of a premium but the market and supply is very small.
I have an opinion of a few things though:
- a TIP is valued less than a 6 speed
- high mileage is valued less than lower mileage
- supidly low mileage (15,000miles or less) is valued more than lower mileage
- Impeccable is better than crappy
If you are happy with the price and the car "fits" you then buy it...each deal is different.
When you buy it then post your pictures and if you are on the forums a bit you can buy a membership ; you will save way more with the knowledge on this site than the cost of the membership.
Cheers,
Mike

Not many Targas were made so there is some what of a rarity factor.
Tiptronics are appx 1 sec slower than a 6speed but they are bulletproof. Most everyone on here who owns one loves it. I think my sig. line says it all.
On that note I think I'll go take it for a drive - Adios!

I bought a tip because of the Los Angeles freeways. It was bought as a daily driver. GREAT car. It took me a couple months to learn the tip and now I love it. Do a search on both Targa and Tiptronics... That should keep you busy for awhile. Welcome to the board.

Before getting my coupe, I too thought about the Targa.
What changed my mind??
It costed 3K more. (not sure if that still holds true today)
Heard about leaks and rattles from the back. (Only few of those had that problem)
Wasn't too crazy with the side profile...
I would say listen to what "MIKE J" said.
Whatever version is, you can't go wrong with 993!

Targas are great. You get best of both worlds between open roof motoring and security of a hardtop. Driving with the glass roof is also a very cool feeling.
Tips are good if you are using the car day to day in traffic. Once you figure out how to use them they are a lot of fun. I switch around different cars manual and auto all the time and I really miss being able to switch gears with the flick of a button. And as far as the tip being slower--maybe off the line, but not for passing or mid range. But 993s are slow anyway...
