Default Got hit by the DME...

Finally. Been waiting for it and was prepared. Had my spare DME relay in the trunk already. Its amazing how much taller the new one is compared to the old one. Hopefully it will last a while.

Just a friendly reminder to always keep a spare one in the trunk.

So were mine.

But, nonetheless, newbies (not you guys ), get an extra DME Relay to keep in the car. Because when your DME Relay fails, the car will not run. It is a simple replacement in the fusebox and you're on your way.....assuming you have a spare. Otherwise, you're probably lookin for the tow truck and a FEDEX box from Pelican.

One day I was in the 993 and came across a broken down, gorgeous '88 Carrera cab on the right shoulder. So I stopped to help. Poor guy's wife was not looking amused. I poked around a bit and said he should first try a new DME relay and "You do keep a spare one of those, don't you?" He said, "No, but I've heard I should." And then he told me he had just spent $12k on a full engine rebuild (WTF?) for that car. Unfortunately, 993 DME's don't work in 3.2 Carreras. So he had to call a tow truck. I thought his wife was gonna ask me to take her home.

Thanks for the info! I am a relative newbie, so I was not aware of this problem. Looking at Pelican, I see a "Fuel Pump DME Relay," part no. 993-615-227-00-M76. I assume that's the one?

Should be the right one. These are only around $25 at the stealer too, so shipping from an online source may eat up your savings.

Without a doubt a spare relay is the way to go -- but if you're really, really, really stuck and the wolves are circling the car -- is there a reason why you can't bridge the relay contacts with a paper clip?

I got mine at a regular car parts place in town and was cheaper then online even with tax. They just ordered it from the local parts warehouse and i picked it up the same day.

The worst case scenerio would be: 100 or more very rural miles with no cell service from home.
I just ordered one DME from Pelican. They have 65 units in stock.
Thanks for the very helpful tip!

You can .... but it helps to have a couple - or a 3 branched wire jumper made up. When the relay is closed, +12v flows from #30 to both #'s 87 & 87b - so bridge the three of these with the key off, and start. Remenber to remove it when shutdown, as it will keep the pump energized.

The simple way to remember is to look at the diagram on the side of any relay .... take live +12v from #30 and feed it to whatever pins are made when the indicated contacts are closed. This is practically always #87 on a standard 4 pin relay.

any specific place? I see we're kind of close and would love to have this out of the way. Was it just like a pep-boy's type place?

Also don't worry about DYI, the relay can only go in one way.
