Crackling noise from above windshield. What is it?

Recently I've noticed a noise coming from what seems to be just above the windshield, or somewhere between the sunroof and and windshield. I can't pinpoint it exactly. It sounds a bit like rain dropping on the roof or a kind of a crackling sound. It's not loud, but it seems to grow louder when the car vibrates more and/or is on a rougher road surface. At first I thought it was a creak in the dash, but it's definitely coming from higher up.
I didn't notice it before, and my car just got back from being wet sanded. I'm pretty sure they didn't remove the windshield, so not sure if there is anything there that might have caused it.
Anyone know what this might be or had a similar noise?

In addition to the conventional fix offerred on this Board I would add the one suggeted to me by my shop as I am replacing my windscreen for Project Orange. They suggested that I have it installed the 964 way rather than the 993 way. They said it would hold up better. Not sure whether this works, but it is something for you to consider.
