996 shift knobs to 993?

I'd like to know this to, but I think you swap out the shape ring under the leather that forms the shift chamber in whatever car it comes out of. Then you re-staple it using the 993 shape ring.......guessing

Couple ways to do it. You need to cut off the boot from the 996/boxster since it won't fit. So you have to butt up the new **** to your old boot. Here, you can use zip ties or stitch them together. I stitched mine together since I didn't like the zip tie solution. Wire would probably work a LOT better than zip ties.
This thread shows the **** presently after Rob Budd at 928 Leather Shop recovered it:

I did this years ago on my 964. I used a 996 wood ****. It was originally attached with zip ties from the factory. I cut my old **** and reused the shift boot, very easy.

There was recently a Central Florida members, 95cabinfl if I remember his user name, that put in a 997 shifter. You make do a search for that. It looks great and is certainly on my "to do" list

Thanks Black993. I did the mod using a 997 shifter I picked up on Ebay. Do a search on my name and you will find the mods with pics.
If I can do it, anyone can

I did this mod awhile back too. Took both the 996 shifter and my 993 shifter / boot to a local upholstery shop. For $10 he took the 996 shifter and glued it to my 993 boot. Looks absolutely perfect, and never been a problem.

In my case, the **** was an eBay find, sans boot. I cut the boot off my old shifter, then zip tied to the shift lever, then installed the ****. Looks factory, no issues with rattling, etc.
