Question Rotor Question

I'm soon to be due for a new set of rotors, this will be the first time I replace them since owning the car. I was thinking about getting some that we're simply slotted and not crossed drilled. A few of the guys at the tracks complain about the drilled ones cracking at the edges...

Any ideas where to find slotted rotors for the regular 993 brakes, not the Big Reds or Silver caliper variety?

Also are the Zimmerman rotors a good value?

Thanks,

Default You could check with...

Jae Lee at Mirage International in San Diego. I believe Jae was looking onto this.

The consensus on the list is that they s*ck like errr...something that s*cks very hard.

Loads of brake squeal and warping have been mentioned. It could have referred to a pig going into hyperspace, in which case I offer my sincerest apologies to Mr. Zimmerman, but he's probably better at making music.

Yeah, I have Zimmermans, and they squeal. And the central area rusts.

Zimmies are a good value if you don't track the car and you really want to save a few bucks, but I would definately buy Textar pads (from the dealer), degrease and paint the centers and outter edges with heat tolerant primer and paint. Should be fine. BUT....I will go OE from the dealer (sunset for no tax) the next time.

I got my OEM rotors from Sunset. They had a really good deal on them at the time and it made the Z's less attractive......I put the OEMs on with Textar pads and I have had no squeal and no rust issues

Not sure you can blame the Zim's for brake squeal--that's the pads. What you can blame them for is lesser quality casting---one of my fronts developed a high spot and associated brake judder after less than 10K on the street. Next time, stockers.

Everyone mentions the squeal but I thought it was because no one was using the anti-squeal shims. But I digress.

Avoid the Zimmermans. I have some friends with good luck and some with bad (warping or poor wear).

If you buy the genuine Porsche rotors and use factory pads, you can easily live without the anti-squeal shims. With Zimmermans, you'll get much more noise, even with the shims...

Since the original poster asked about cracking rotors at the track, perhaps noise it not a concern. In this case, I would still avoid the Zimmermans (I've heard they don't last as long on the track) and love the Pagid RS19 or 29 Yellow pads. Slotted rotors do have a good reputation, but I'm not sure where to find them in 993 sizes.

Grant, sounds like you have more experience than me.

But the real reason I'm posting again (and hopefully not trashing your thread Josh), was your 73 in Excellence?

What would be the price difference ? I seem to remember FVD does a set vor something like 400USD. I don't want to be frugal about brakes, but knowing the stealers around here they probably ask around 1K.

This entire time its been the rotors that have been squealing? I bought OEM rotors from Automotion, and was upset to find that they consider Zimmermans to be oem. I am now more upset because these F***ing rotors are my squeal issue. I forget who the pads are, but they are supposed to be OEM as well.

I think a big part of the problem is that people don't know what to ask for.

"OEM" is any crap that meets the basic specs of the part. OEM is not what came on your car.

Ask for OE Porsche box parts and you know you're getting the good stuff.

OEM and Factory are not the same thing. It means it's the same vendor as one used by the factory, but not necessarily the same part. Very true of Zimmerman - they make rotors for Porsche, but the the ones they sell to Porsche are not the ones sold from private vendors as OEM...
