Wink 993 Oil change observation...

Having owned several 911's prior to the 993 I am amazed daily amazed at the 'cost' associated with even the most rudimentary maintenance. I associate 'cost' with Time and Dollars, but we gotta' sacrafice to play this game, right? Anyway, I read all the DIY's associated with the dreaded 2 hour oil change and as I got into it, I realized that you really don't have to remove that hard oil line that every body talks about. Just put your oil filter wrench on the small oil filter and just loosen it 1/4 turn initially and them REMOVE the oil filter removal tool. THEN turn the filter off by hand. The filter will then simply 'fish' out of the cramped spaces and oil lines. Too simple - I'll be darned if I am removing that hard line everytime I change the oil. Absolutely no need to anyway. Also I got bad info from the local (high buck) dealer (surprise???) when they were doing my PPI. When we were discussing oil change, they said to used 0/40 Mobil ONE. So I did - but as I was talking to Steve at Rennsport he said - "No, No,No..." Why? Because 0/40 is for the liquid cooled version due to a peculiar viscosity requirement for their sexy vario-cam. Jeez...here I am running around with sewing machine oil in my car:^( What is every body using for oil then???

Welllll... not necessarily so. Mine uses the Shell Helix Ultra 0-40 as per what was in the car when I got it..

Cheers,

Hmmmm - maybe I should discuss with Steve again. He said to use the multiple weight-50 Mobile One. OBTW mcar is smewhat mature in the milage department too - 105K. I was considering using him to rebuild my distributor system since I was prompted to consider it from a recent post regarding a broken belt. I'm going to swag it that mine has never been touched - as well as the shocks, etc.

I believe the technical bulletin update was intended for the newer water pumpers due to oil not flowing quickly enough to the hydraulic lifters when cold. So I have been using 0w40 in my 996 and have noticed way less valvetrain noise on morning start up, but still continues to use 15w50 in my 993.

DOes anyone find that 15-50 in hot weather decreases oil consumption? I am using 10-40 now on 50k mile engine but only about 1000 mi/qt.

Using a 15w-50 MAY reduce your oil consumption but I'd bet that you have some valve guide wear (typical) and thats where your oil is most likely going, especially if you have over 60K on it.

Porsche has always recommended a 40 weight oil for the 993 and it was in fact the original factory fill. The problem is that up until recently it has been next to impossible to purchase in the USA so independent Porsche shops have been using a 50 weight.

...so I'm ok to leave it in for 5K miles or so:^) I'm sort of anxious to calculate my oil usage - but sort of not.

Yes , 0-40 is perfectly OK for your car. It's very good oil, also for the 993.
My car (993S from '97) came with 0-40 Mobil 1.
