Give it a chance to make it up to you. You'll see how fast you can warm up to it.

After reading thru' 11 pages of your saga, I'm delighted that you got to the bottom of the problem - lets face it, they only come alive above 4K! Previous owner must have been very cautious with his right toe.

A lot to be said for regularly red-lining on the up changes. Not so good the other way (not that I'm admitting to going from 6th to 3rd - except deliberately)

Yes.

At 59,000 I had mine cleaned and it was really dirty.

If you do a search, there are several posts and how to links. Its probably one of the easier DIY and I had my shop do it during the 60k tune a few months back.

Question for the group: Maybe someone should organize a GB for the 540 wagon??? Might go out to Summit Pt this weekend to watch - will the track be covered by 540 wagons blistering up the tarmac???

Hey, congrats Marlon. I'm sad you were without car for a while but it really was a good read and fun to armchair quarterback while you waited patiently.

Try to keep it below 6500!

Default Same Problem loss of power @ 4K rpm

Hi Steve,

I seem to have the same problem. when the RPM hits the 4-4.5 K i can feel loss of power. What exactly needs to be checked on the CAT. should it be replaced?.
I live in Kuwait, so we don't have any smog, cat restrictions.so what would be your recommendation.

Thanks

Najeeb

Hi Najeeb:

Mark's problem was caused by a melted and blocked cat and it was found with the standard back pressure test used by automotive technicians. In his case, I think that was triggered by a non-functioning oxysensor.

As you may have read here, his car was not properly maintained and he needed to replace a lot of items that one should do at 30K and 60K miles to establish a baseline.

Without knowing how many miles are on your car and what tune-up items have been replaced, its difficult to speculate what might be wrong here.

I would make sure that:

1) The fuel filter is fresh

2) All ignition components are in perfect working order

3) Oxysensor is functioning correctly

4) Cylinder head temp sensor and its wiring/connectors are in perfect condition

5) 98 RON fuel is in the tank

6) Outside air temps are below 30 deg C.

I would further recommend that the factory scan tool get plugged in and the knock-sensor counts noted. This is especially important due to your local climate. I'd also kindly suggest that you read the "Admin" note at the top of the 993 Forum page that I posted since that has suggestions for folks requiring assistance,.... (I need more information to help diagnose your car)

Please let me know what you find after you do all the above.

Kajeeb,
The way we tested it was to remove the small bolt just behind the O2 sensor. We screwed a pipe fitting with a collar in it and put a pressure gage on it. When the car is idling there should only be a couple lbs positive pressure comig out and then when you rev it up, the pressure should increase slightly but not drastically. Mine increased drastically since the exhaust gasses couldnt get throught the cat sufficiently it was trying to come out this hole/gage. Pretty simple really. Also, we were able to take out the O2 sensor and we used a tiny light on a flexible stick to look into the O2 hole. If youlook really really close, you can see the end of "Honeycombed" cat material. On mine, it was all clogged and you could see it. I was foutunite that I had a spare one there that I borrowed that I could also look at. The spare one (Also from a 78k mile car) looked perfect inside. Anyway, hope this helps.

What tends to clog the cats on these cars?
