Default GT3 engine in a 993...

Has anyone attempted to install a Gt3 engine in a 993? If possible, what other modifications besides the obvious such as conversion for watercooling are necessary? Can a 993 RS gearbox be used? At the end of the day it is the same base engine from the 964 in both the 993 RS as well as in the GT3.

I am aware that it would entail some surgery but I am wondering if it is possible and if anyone has done it?

The other alternative would be to fit a 993 turbo engine but ideally I would like a noramlly aspirated engine.

Cheers,

Jonas

If you're looking a spending THAT much money, why not 'save' some and rebuild your existing motor with a LWF, 9m heads, 3.8 liter kit, and regear your transmission. You'll end up with something close in terms of power and a lot less hassle and expense.

I already have an original 993 RS Clubsport but I want more power. I don't want to modify the engine with different heads etc. Therefore I am looking at a radically different option.

I really like the characteristics of the GT3 engine and that in a light 993 RS chassi would be [if possible] a wet dream...

Let me see if I have this right. You have an original 993 RSCS and you won't modify the engine, but you are willing to do "some surgery" on it ?? It doesn't make a lot of sense to me. I would take jdistefa's suggestion, but source another na 3.6 engine as the basis for the mods.

Yes, it is possible to do. Your 993RS transmission will bolt up to the GT3 engine. I did a MoTeC system on a 73 chassis with a GT2 TT engine and there was no modification to the chassis itself outside of bending a pinch weld for the on engine oil tank. The 993 chassis should be similar. I recall reading an article where Kelly Moss installed a GT3R racing engine into a 993 race car, so they have done it successfully.

If you are in Europe you should talk to Colin Belton at Ninemeister in Warrington, UK. He posts on Rennlist from time to time. You wouldn't have to turn it into a watercooled RS.

+1. I have purchased Ninemeister's 3.8 kit and hope to have my car on the road in the next few weeks. When hopefully I can get a live dyno remap done the engine should put out 360hp and more torque than a 997 GT3. So I cannot speak from experience yet. And if you want more bang Ninemeister can deliver that as well but of course for more buck.

I would not know if it fits a narrowbody 993 being that the 996 is wider, but if like Geoffrey is saying it can be fitted without major work, and you can get your hands on a low mileage used one, it will be the best bang for the buck by far. You will have true 400 Porsche BHP on a high revving bulletproof engine that will perform better than any modified aircooled engine on the track or the street, lap after lap, without reliability issues, and with guaranteed results!

As for the TT engine on a NB, I am assuming it might be more difficult but you have a RSCS wing. Again, straightforward, long life, guaranteed 400 Porsche BHP. Best bang for the buck
