California Smog Check Info - Reason for those High Levels
Had to go to the referee smog check location due to the lack of OBD II codes.
According to the referee, the reason that we are seeing higher emission numbers on our smog test is that as soon as the smog testing compute reads a number that passes the car it quits the test. They starting doing this recently when they figured out that running the test for two minutes per car a thousand times a day adds just that much more pollutants to the air. Whereas, the two minute test would give you a more accurate reading of you car. The referee told me that some stations are taking advantage of this by showing the customer that their car just barely passed and recommending unneeded repairs.

Our smog test does the same thing...if the car is really clean at the beginning of a cycle the test is dropped and finished early. If the car stays on the dyno that could spell trouble. However if we pass we pass...no need for any repairs. The local population hates the system and its very inconsistant...if you fail at one station go to the other and you likely to pass!
