AC Bug---bad control unit
Just got the verdict on my AC--it appears to be a bad control unit. Everything else checks out perfectly.
Rather than dumping $1600 into a new one, my shop is going to trick the system and put a manual switch to turn the compressor on an off. So when I want air, I will just flip the switch next to the drivers seat. I rarely use AC anyway so Im just going to take that route for now. Of course, its a 100 today so it would be nice in mid afternoon! $500 out the door and I have A/C. And a Gert Protection bar installed.
Could have rigged it to the ignition so when I turn on the car, the compressor kicks in but I didnt like that idea of having it run all the time.

Me too
I just had my AC checked because of lack of cold air. Same thing, but they
insisted I get a whole new unit. I like your idea better. Once done can
you provide details? I think I might do the same thing.

Couldnt ask for better timing to have AC. 96-100 over the next week but what I love about being a desertrat, only about 5% humidity. Strangely, I cant wait for the afternoon monsoons to start rolling up from the SW in a few weeks. I almost forget what rain is!!

Well, the AC works great!! The cable and switch can be tucked in the side of the floor mat or be pulled up on the right side of the drivers seat. You can get about any switch you want. I just happend to go with the shop to Checkers and pick one up since the 1st one was defective. Just a basic switch that turns the compressor on and off. It costs like $4 for the switch alone.
My shop built some type of device between in the rear fuse box that did something electrical--ok, call me stupid but I forgot what it was called. Long day already. The cable was run through the firewall and under the carpet.
Walked away with $22 in parts, $383 in labor-$405 for the fix. The most costly part of the whole thing was the troubleshooting prior.
$42.50 to install the Gert Bar.
$445 Total--one of my cheapest trips to the shop for something other than an oil change!!
I'll see if my shop with do a little write up and post if it would be of interest to others. And a couple of pics as well.
Eventually I will replace the CCU but I just wanted it fixed right now because of the heat in Utah right now.
