Default Cab top question

Anyone know a current price on a top frame price? Just had damage done to my top which has bent the top frame. Don't think straightening it is an option. So I wondering if anyone has priced a top frame lately or if anyone has an idea. The material on mine is fine and can probably be removed and put on new frame.

full story on how it happened to follow in the future (when I'm ready to talk about it)

Jim

Looks like it just needs the front section. Nothing Porsche is cheap but not the end of the world either.

Whole car has some issues unfortunately. Fell off the lift at my mechanics. The last day it was getting buttoned up after pulling the engine and going through it completely... new gaskets, new clutch, flywheel, new rsr mufflers. Lift failure forced it to drop on the *** end. after 5 weeks of waiting for the rebuild...it will now head to the bodyshop for who knows how long.

AAAARRRRRGGGG!!!!!

ya...he has garage liability insurance. question is, how easy is the insurance company going to be to deal with. And are they going to understand the necessity of a proper fix rather than cutting corners. Going to be a fight I believe. Especially if they look in a book and try to tell me that my car is worth under $30k and that any repairs over $15,000 will make it be a write off. How do you explain to these kind of people that the car may actually be irreplaceable. Not looking forward to this process.

by the way...what was the extent of the wide body conversion? And what was the cost. Right now, the whole *** end of mine is going to have to be redone anyway. Maybe I could pay some extra and make it a fat ***.

Let me know.

Sorry to hear of your bad fortune Jim. That is really very unfortunate. I hope your repairs go smoothly and the insurance company pays up. Do you have any structural damage to the car or just sheet metal and cosmetic damage?

Hard to tell. But I'm confident that there is a twist to the frame. As you can see from the rear picture, the car came down on the left fender. I'm told it was vertical when it hit as the lift caught the front end because the front arms of the lift went into the wheel wells behind the front wheels. so the rear left was hit in an up direction. The rear deck lid is out about 2.5". rear left fender is creased out in two spots, rear left fender is creased in. We'll send it to my bodyshop and get his opinion on it tomorrow or Tuesday hopefully. It's definitely going to have to be pulled. We will see.

apparently the guys from the shop have pics of my car vertical. I'll try to get them tomorrow. It's still hard for me to believe that this happened and the story is just crazy. Maybe pictures will help me understand. I think they'll just amaze me even more.

Jim,

The WB conversion takes a lot of patience and a strong stomach.

They replace the rear quarters, rocker panels, and extend the rockers on the front fenders. Rear bumper needs to be changed (front is optional), exhaust tips, heat shields, wheels (or spacers), some support brackets need to be changed out as well. Gert sells the parts, I went with the dealer for all of it. The rear quarters need some modification as the factory doesn't make wb quarters for cabs.

If I recall correctly, the rear quarters are about $1k each, the rockers $700 each, the extensions $15 each, rear bumper (euro) $1500.... so with the big stuff you're at about $5k in parts. If they are covering your two rear quarters anyway, I would do it since the price of the NB quarters are the same. Labor is where they get you and I guess that cost can vary. Even though I like being a rarity with fat *** cab, it'd be great for you to get it done too. When the body shop starts pricing parts, go ahead and have them see what the costs are for the parts I mentioned. I went ahead and got a front tt bumper as well and had to get a set of wheels (2 now).

I just read that your quarters did buckle or crease so it should be up to you if you want to change them out. I would make sure all the plumbing is good since the lift caught the car in the front wheel wells.

Ouch!

I would look into sourcing the entire top assembly from one of the dismantlers; cars inc, or PartsHeaven, etc. I don't think you want to know the factory price for a new one. I think it's in excess of $5k; the car I bought in January had a tree limb fall on it before I bought it; thankfully, it landed square on the top and bent the top frame but caused no other damage on the car.

Then again, it's the shop's fault, insist on everything new or fair market value on the car.

I've posted this before, but the best way to get an insurance company to understand the value of your car is to look it up in the Black Book Cars of Particular Interest for your region. That will give you an accurate number. Then back it up with a dozen or so comparable for sale ads (same year and approximate mileage) which you can harvest from the really high-end shops, like Truspeed, RPM, Holt, Panorama, etc. When my low mileage 95 C2 was totalled 2 years ago, the first offer was $29k; I got the CPI value and second offer was right on the money at $41k.

Hope it all works out for you. I posted a photo of a 996 that fell off the lift at a dealer recently when they forgot to spread the arms out before lifting it. It was laying on its side like a dead dog. Horrific photos.

opinions are like other parts of the anatomy, everybody has one. Here is mine.

find an attorney in your area who is a rennlister/ addict or just loves cars. you may need to look a bit. get him/her on board quickly. in thebackground or "looking out for your interests" Attorneys have a different way of seeing, its an acquired skill. i believe you need their insight.
i believe your right, its gonna be a fight and the exposure of the shop, the lift maker and your damages willbe a complicated mess, with all wanting to "compromise".
im not saying Lawsuit, I am saying the THey in this equation need to know you expect it be put into "like kind and quality" or words to that effect. data, photos etc need to be made avail to you. if you dont ask youve told yourself No.
keep asking questions, you get little bits of information about what really happend.
I beleve you need expert help. the prev large post of what other Rennlisters do may be helpful to peruse.
very saddened indeed for you. I would need three prozac patches.
