Our local Costco has the Mobil 1 15/50 "SM, SL/CF" formulation, silver cap, and I've been using it to top off the engine... Is that the "new-old" stuff?
I've read everything here and became more confused than ever. One local (racing-oriented) mechanic suggested the Swepco 15-40, just like Steve Weiner did earlier. For my next change, that's what I'll most likely be switching to, or I'll just throw my hands up and use the Extra Virgin in my pantry...

EOS (aka Engine Oil Supplement) is GM's ZDDP additive made for breaking in new engines. Its been around since the early 70's and is really good stuff.
Up until recently, we only used it in new engines when they were first run on the dyno to break them in. Now, with all the oil reformulations that were made to comply with the EPA's mandate for extended cat life, we use it to fortify some oils that are currently a little short of ZDDP to extend engine longevity.
We use different stuff for engine assembly lubrication,..

Well, just returned from the local WalMart and found the "new" 15w-50w Mobile 1. It even says new on the bottles and is NOT the 15w-50w Extended Life stuff I was finding everywhere. However the rating is now SM SL/CF.
Is this a good thing? Is this now an oil we can use without the GM Engine Oil Supplement?
It seems a little confusing that it's rated for SM and SL. Is it that it now covers all bases? Does it include the anti-wear additives that it use to as an SL SJ/CF red capped 15w-50w Mobile 1 did?
Not to beat a dead horse here, but it would be nice to know these things, despite the fact I'll probably swing by WalMart on my way home and pick up the "new" 15w-50w.
Any thoughts, Steve. It just would be more convenient than adding the EOS every change.
Got to go to work, late already!
Interestingly enough, their 10w-40w Mobil 1 (higher mileage formula for cars with over 75k miles) is rated SL/CF.

Hi Ken:
You've raised some good questions,....![Smilie](https://rennlist.com/forums/images/smilies/smile.gif)
The API specs for SL & SM rated oils are slightly different since the SM-rated stuff was formulated to protect the cats with reduced P, Zn, and S. I too, am a bit confused as it would seem like SL/SM ratings are mutually exclusive.
I would hope that the "new" M1 15w-50 has 1200ppm of Zn & P but we just won't know until its been tested.

What do you think about the 10w-40w stuff I mentioned. Since it IS rated SL/CF it does seem to fill the bill same as the "old" red capped 15w-50w that was SL SJ/CF would, right?
Or do you think for a road car in Florida it would lack too much being a 40w.

Thanks Steve.
I think I'll go with that until this stuff all gets sorted out. I never drive the car enough to qualify for more than the recommended "once a year" oil change so maybe by next year this time....

Per the "Engine Oils Approved by Porsche" from 7/06 Castrol Syntec is still approved. Anyone have issues with it?
I know I'm being picky here but does anyone else get irritated when you can buy 5 (single) quart jugs cheaper than you can buy a 1 gal. jug.? Just one of my pet peeves (sp?). (for those just waking up there are 4 qts. in a gal.)
