According to John Starkey's book R-RS-RSR, Porsche has been using these letters for sometime.

In the past, the "S" stood for SPORT, RS is Rennen (racing) Sport. I assume it is the same today.

It's not an "S". It's skid marks.

According to the internet, RS means "Really Sexy". Not sure where Jim is getting his info, but it can't be as good as the internet.

Actually I think he's correct. Anybody want to hazard a guess for "RSR"?

The first answer is the correct answer. S stood for Super in the early days, and it's reasonable to assume it still stands for the same thing today, although Porsche doesn't spell it out for us.

I agree with all of you.

Super - It is super
Slower - the added weight and aero drag does impact for track driving, but without it how else would I be able to argue it isn't driver capabilities that makes me so slow
Sport - it is sporty
Superfragilisticexpealidocious - Because mark is such a comedian

With all this talk, anyone interested in trading a wide body for a well setup (for the track - suspension) narrow body?

"Second," as in factory second. Avoid the S models. They are like buying a shirt marked irregular.

According to Excellence Was Expected,
with the 356, it stood for "Super." It designated additional power.
with the 911, they changed the term to mean "Sport." When they began building the 911T (touring), 911L (Luxo) and 911S (sport).
When it came out, the RS did stand for Renn Sport
RSR was the "race" version of the "Renn Sport."
