Most PCA chapters (I believe) will not permit motorcycle helmets. They definitely do NOT around here. Check your local chapter's rules.

This is the helmet I have and am very happy with it. Based on the Bell designs, comfortable and relatively inexpensive. SA2005 rated and Nomex lined:

Most sanctioning bodies require SA rated helmets. Check before you buy as most shops won't let you return a helmet after you purchase it.

I ride motorcycles and I use Arai. I know they also make driving helmets, a little pricey, but a great helmet. Check out www.arai.com

Sam,

You really need to try on the helmet because the fit has to be spot-on. Maybe order three and return two, and chalk the shipping cost to the price of doing DE's.

I purchased a cheapo HJC helmet last week for $68, full retail price. I used it yesterday at the local autocross. It was fine. SA2005 rated and NOT full face. To me, full face helmets are really hot in warmer climates. It was Africa hot yesterday and I was really glad to have an open face helmet.

+1 on the pyrotect. Bought mine from Apex Performance, who are a rennlist sponser. Same price, they offer a rennlist discount, I think, and I got a bag for free. The service is top notch. I second trying them on before if you can, but I got lucky and mine fit first try. Good luck.

Another thing to try regarding fit if you are considering the Pyrotect is try on a Bell. They are the same molds and fit almost identically. If a bell fits you, chances are good that a Pyrotect in the same size will fit too.

You'd be surprised at how different each manufacturer's molds are... When I did the motorcycle thing, I bought a Bell, only to find out later that Arai had the perfect fit for my oval noggin...got the Arai XD later (for motorcycles only).

What's with ventilation options? I haven't done a DE or even autocross, yet, but I assume the windows are closed and fans are off. Do most people in hotter climates use helmet "fresh air blowers"? I would sweat so much inside my car, I might need to buy neoprene covers for the seat!

Apex have renn. discounts. Bell is good. Arai is better but 2x the price.

Don't skimp money on your helmet for crying out loud.. It's the only thing that protects your head...
And, if your only doing DE's now, there is a good chance you will be doing more, later. (Like a Skip Barber racing school or something..)
My point is, helmets are generally a five year investment. Spend the money and get something that's comfortable, breathes well, and have it fitted for a future HANS device. Skimp money on the other stuff, like driving shoes or gloves, but not on the bucket that protects your brain.

Also, you will find that having a well made, comfortable helmet, that doesn't get destroyed in one season, will cost you some $$$. But being comfortable in your helmet on the track, can make the experience of having to wear one, very good or very bad.

I recommend an Impact helmet...
