1995 vs 96-98 993's
#16
As mentioned, the '96-98 has the potential for the "check engine" light problem which is roughly a $1500 fix every 60K miles or so depending how you drive the car (unless you take it to the dealer and they quote you 6K).

Are you thinking 6-speed coupe? RWD/AWD?
You also need to decide if you feel like overpaying for an "S" or not.
Also depends on how much you want to spend. I'd be much more comfortable in a '95 with more than 70K miles or more (for example) than a '96+ car.
Don't worry too much about the technical differences between the two versions. They really don't amount to much, IMO. Just buy the nicest one you can find.

'95s have a bunch of really nice features
OBD1
55 pin harnesses
swapable chips
lighter, better flowing intakes
some have separable 2nd gears
the do need the steering rack brace
many 12yr old rubber suspension parts will need replacement

Thanks for the info guys, keep 'em comin'! dcdude, I've now narrowed it to 2wd, coupe or cabrio. I love the s models but cant justify all the extra money for one, though probably worth it in the long run. Really don't need C4 in Florida either. Why do you say you would take the 95 w/ 70000 over a 96+?

Nope, just someone that has figured out a way to clean out the carbon w/o doing the valve job. I don't know much beyond that little bit of info, but apparently its a lot cheaper than what people pay at the dealer to handle this problem.
