First off, hello to everyone here....

OK, I've been trolling for the past few months, and I just sold my 350z (twin turbo roadster at that), trying to decipher what kind of Porsche I want. I "think" I'm leaning towards a 993, widebody, non-turbo, but something about not having a convertible also makes me think that a cab would be a nice replacement too. So that being said, I found a couple local ones in the area -

Option 1) '97 Silver/Black C2S, 58.5k miles, asking $42,888 (dealer, could prob neg)
Option 2) '97 Black/Black C4 Cab, about 22.5k miles, tasteful mods, asking $54k (rennlister)
Option 3) '97 Red/Cashmere C4S, 62k miles, asking $38,000 (indy dealer, could prob neg)
Option 4) '97 Glacier White/Cashmere C4S, 46k miles, asking $51,900 (Cars Dawydiak, and yes, I agree, their prices seem somewhere beyond reality)

Little background for myself, I'm looking to get something extremely reliable, that holds its value well, but will take the abuse at the occasional local HPDE event every now and then. Oh yeah, an informative and enthusiastic forum doesn't hurt either.

So, it can take 6 days or 6 months, but the search has officially begun. Any advice along the way will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Welcome to the fold Don't forget about membership.......the best few dollars you'll ever spend The 2 vs. 4 depends on whether or not you need all wheel drive or not. For that kind of money, buy what will serve you best. If you don't need 4 wheel drive, buy the 2S. It sounds like the best deal (with the limited info you've given). And as one of the higher miles cars, you will have less of an issue beating on it as apposed to a low miles "queen".

I bought a 4S because it was a steal even though I don't need all wheel drive at the beach I just recently disconnected the front driveline and love that all the power now goes to the rear. I now have a low production vehicle (4S) that I can have fun with and then put back to 4 wheel some day with a simple 2 bolts.

GL with the search

Man, that's a tough choice. Where are you located? Take a look at each car if you can. Welcome to the board, membership is the best!

Option 1 would get my vote...I bought a '98 last year with virtually identical mileage for significantly more than the price you listed.

Welcome aboard.

A point about negotiating the price... I doubt you'll get much of a discount.
The 993 is now a modern day classic, the last and arguably the best aircooled Porker. Died and blue Porsche fans want the aircooler cars. Not that the water kettles are bad but the aircoolers are traditional cars.

For instance, in the last year, the number of 993 RS's for sale (.. have not paid specific attention to the other models..) on mobile.de has decreased 5 fold. The sole one for sale there is priced at 100K Euros. (I like this part..)

But best of luck, someone may be down on luck and want a quick trade.

I've talked to a couple guys with drop tops who do track events and they both told me in hind sight, they wish they had bought coupes.

Love your avatar, Jerry. I hope for all of us that you get to go home to that every night!!

As for the car, Option 1 or 3. C2S will feel more fun in the curves, especially after you fall down the slope and change the suspension. The C4S is all wheel drive, so you lose a little feel in the turns, but it is a great car. That, and the fact that Guards Red with Cashmere is a gorgeous combo!!!

Good luck!

Thanks, all. I've got a line in on Option #1....so the dealer stated that they are working on getting things up to snuff (I mentioned 60k service), so we will see how that goes. If not, I'll just wait until the right one comes along. Any Silver on Black is really what I'm looking for, and your suggestions just pushed along what I was truly seeking - a C2S. I've got an Audi Quattro already which can serve as the poor weather vehicle. I'll keep y'all posted....

Jeff - I'm in the South Bay.

Mike,

I would say option 1 as well.

If the red C4S is the same one that I'm thinking is in the peninsula, be weary! I believe that car used to have a tpc supercharger in it. They had it on the market for a while with it installed but couldn't sell it because it wouldn't pass smog. I tried to low ball them on it because I have a house in Nevada and thought I'd register it there. They didn't want to give the car away so I passed. Looks like the sc has been removed and not to diss having a supercharger, you just don't know how hard the guy drove it. If it's the same car, it's been there for years!
