Holy Sh*t Doug! Then why does it seemingly have a cult following, with many reputable shops still pushing/swearing by it? My guy is one of the most respected in the biz, and he filled my car with it for the 60k service.

Hi Dan,
yes well it is sad that the 5w-50 version is not available in NA - it is an excellent product

M1 15w-50 is a fine oil too have no doubt, and it is widely used by many in the Porsche community in NA

I suppose it is "marketed" by Service Providers as a safe alternative for those that simply don't like SAE40 lubricants - Approved or not

Sorry to dig this one back up, but Doug... do you know what Aryl and Alkyl concentrations of ZDPs are typical for "modern" passenger car vs. diesel oils?

My head is going to explode, but maybe I'm just too lazy to dig into all the myriad details. I do have a strong sense of not knowing what I don't know...you know?

Net net...what should I put in my 993 cab which is summer driven and tracked/AutoX? I have been putting in Mobile 15-50 like most everyone else, but just buying it when I found it, not looking at the various formulations. I don't know what to look for to see if I should use any of it or none of it...HELP HELP HELP!

Thanks,

Hi Charles,
the short answer to your question is no! This is due to the wide mix of lubricant types and very advanced formulations now available

The Ayrl reference is of course generic in that it refers to a functional "group" of organic molecules. The Aykl groups are widespread and include the various forms within the Zinc Dialkyl Dithio Phosphate (ZDP, ZDDP, ZnDTP) family

The formulation of HD/HDEOs has always been predicated towards soot load handing ability and corrosion controls. As well, volatility, oxidation and foaming controls along with a higher HTHS viscosity (than similar viscosity PCOs) and viscosity retention performance over extended OCIs.. Manufacturer Approved HDEOs are often "driven" by the metallurgy used and the technical complexity of the engine family. This could be the type of turbo or supercharger used, the cam drive components, combustion system/valve gear design and oil cooler arrangements etc and etc

It is fair to say that many new Group 3 lubricants (called semi-synthetics here in OZ) now surpass many older formulation synthetic polyalphaolefin based lubricants

Cool

Might want to read this regarding old oil. Would the SJ SL leave this much residue/sludge?

hate to dig this up again but i just came from Redline's website and all their multi weight oils are SM, does that mean they are no longer have enough ZDDP for our needs???
