Mechanic charges- reasonable & customary?
A brief poll to see if your mechanic charges "list" or passes on any discount for parts he/she replaces. What should be expected?

He makes some money on standard parts he has on hand, but is fine with me sourcing special stuff that he'd end up ordering through the dealer.
Generally if a shop is run by businessmen as opposed to mechanics, the more likely they are to get **** about catching every hidden markup they can. In some cases where I've already had a part, I offer to pay what they would have made marking up the part.

My mechanic does mark up parts, as he should since he's paid the cost of sourcing them and will warrant them. He'll also install stuff that I buy with no issues but I think he may do that on a case-by-case basis. Clearly any customer-supplied parts aren't warranteed.

What is the dealer markup on parts? I find with my local independent that Rennlist membership results in a quick 10% discount from 'list'. I can't really say how they feel about it when I supply my own parts, but I am sure they are giving up some margin that might find it's way into the hours??
