Default 1997 exhaust question

With the car on the lift, mounted directly under each muffler, is a baffel with a rectangular opening that has what appears to be a hard rubber door on it. Can any one tell me what they are? Looks like a vent of sorts.

If this is what you are talking about... .

I believe the vents serves two purpose . (1). To vent off hot air from the engine when the temperature of engine gets to a certain degrees when the engine is off to prevent heat soak. (2). To bleed off excessive flow of hot air from the heat exchanger to the interior of the car. As we get our heat from both the electric blower on the right side of the engine and the engine fan itself. The engine fan will push air through the heat exchanger to the front cabine of the car, when the heat diaphram is closed the hot air is block and is forced out through the opening on the bottom of the car. The rubber flap is there to prevent carbon monoxide from entering the interior of the car when the car is moving in reverse.

Anyways, something like that.

Robin;

Sounds like an accurate discription of what it does, but that is not what it looks like. Could it be the diffrence between your 96 and my 97??

I have a 97 and the picture above looks like what you have described, although the rectangular opening and the "hard rubber door" are not shown in the pic...it would be off to the right of the picture (not shown). On my car these don't sit "under the muffler" but are closer to the centerline of the car on both sides.

Here is a better pic, they are an outlet for heated air which is either dumped here or goes to the cabin depending on you heat settings
