This week in the News: ROAD TRIP! Denver to SF w/new-to-me '98 C4S
So, it is finally happening. After "passing" the PPI (#1 cylinder was at 4% and the Front Pinion seal leaked--bad? I'm not a mechanic, yet), I am flying out to Denver to pick up fellow Rennlister's (troppo) 1998 C4S (89k miles) and driving it back home to San Francisco! After debating it over and over, I decided that eventhough the drive would be putting some serious miles (~1600) on the car in a short period, it is one of those events that we won't have the opportunity to experience frequently in life.
My old friend/best man/godfather to my baby is joining me for the first half. He's single, so he's got no excuse to stay home. Since it's only the beginning of Spring, the Rockies are still getting snow, not good with summer tires, also, I need to get him back to Scottsdale, AZ, so we're are taking I-25 South to Santa Fe/Albuquerque, then cutting over into AZ. From Scottsdale, I'll try to make San Francisco in a day, if not, I'll be making a stop over in LA.
I will be taking my digital SLR, and hopefully the new wide-angle zoom lens I ordered arrives before I leave, so a full travel write-up will follow in the first week of April.
I am leaving home Thursday, so I really don't have much time to order spare parts off the internet. ie: a DME Relay. Should I bring one? Anything else I should bring? Can I take a DME onboard an airplane? I've got AAA Plus, so I'm good for a 100-mile tow & will call on Rennlister's if I get caught up along the way! I've got a small duffle with some clothes/travel stuff, and Adrian Streather's 993 book (<--it's heavy)...overkill?
Full Trip Map
Here's some satellite images of the route (in Purple) from Google Earth:

All to be completed in this:
PS: Does linking the photos/images use less bandwith since it is being hosted on another server? Want to know for future reference. Thanks!

Congrats! The best road trip of my life happened between September 12, 2005 and September 17, 2005. I found my '95 Carrera in Seattle and promptly drove it 3,200 miles back to Baltimore, via a most scenic route through Canada. No issues whatsoever. If the car is good health and passed its PPI with no glaring problems, gas it up and go!

I wouldn't try to take any electrical parts in carryon bag. I would buy an electric air pump that plugs into the cigar lighter after you pick up the car if it doesn't have one -- to inflate the collapsable spare if you need it.
Have fun and I hope to see you around with your 993!

Looks like you've got a great trip in front of you. What a fantastic way to spend your first 1,600 miles in the seat. Enjoy the drive and post lots of pics.

Hey Jeff...Congratulations and I envy your upcoming trip. You will have a memory that will last a lifetime. I picked up my car in Phonex and drove to Seattle (about 1700 mi.) and it was the best introduction to the 993 you could ask for. There are roads that you can stretch her legs on...just enjoy yourself. Take plenty of pictures and keep us all informed.

Wow, that sounds like a great trip. Just plan on taking the extra day on the second leg and have fun! I would not worry about the DME on the plane. I travel quite a bit for work and take electronic components, in my carry on, with me all the time.

That should be a great trip. I drove mine from Phoenix to Bangor (3400+ miles) last June and will be bringing it to Laredo from Maine in July. It seems that the need to refill on gas and my need for a pit stop were about the same so the trip was a great deal of fun. Have a good time.

What a great trip, in my opinion you should jump onto Highway 1 and cruise along the ocean when you get into California. Maybe it is to crowded, but Southern Cal on the 1 is an amazing road worthy of the 911. Enjoy!
