Default OT - Saw an Audi R8...

...at the dealer yesterday. Dark titanium grey with carbon fiber panels after the doors and carbon fiber all over the engine bay. Wasn't that impressed with the interior and the glass engine cover was sorta cheesy...too wanna-be Ferrari 430'ish IMHO. Overall I thought the car was very sexy and very sweet, but the dealer's ask price was too steep (almost Lambo Gallardo range!)...and in any case, if I was in the market I would wait for the V10 next year

If you've got a few minutes to kill, the website is pretty nifty (assuming you have broadband). Worth ten or fifteen minutes to surf it...

It's featured in this month's Road & Track for anyone who's interested. Seems like an impressive
car, the styling will take some getting used to (for me).

Interesting story....
My uncle does quite a bit of business with Seal (the singer) and he has one. He stopped by my uncle's house the other day in his R8...which is 5 minutes from my place. Seal is quite the car aficianado (Audi gives him cars to use) and was more than gracious in showing off the car. It is very impressive (as was Seal...very down to Earth). I would love to have one but not at the premiums that the dealers are asking.

A 997S will probably destroy it on a race course. I remember a Top Gear piece that pitted the 997S against a AM Vantage V8 and a M5. The M5 and AM Vantage V8 completed the course in the exact same time the 997S went about 5mph average speed faster.

I think you're right about that. One of my mags (can't remember which) did just this comparison, and the 997S was a bit faster.

Having said that, I think the Audi is really cool, and look forward to seeing one on the road. If nothing else, it will keep Porsche on their toes. The minute competition stops, we'll stop seeing better cars every year.

I saw an R8 at the Chicago auto show this year. It was a good looking car but I wasn't blown away. Very Audi, well built, clean lines, nothing over the top. But if you go on Winding Road.com and check out the video section there is some good footage of the car. While I'm not wild on the looks, the sound of that high strung 4.2 V8 is hard not to like.

My partner just bought a RS6. Sweet sounding V-10. Awesome sport seats. Awesome AWD..but the car feels heavy. I like it better than the AMG 55 not as much as a M5.

I am sure if the r8 was at a better (cheaper) price point we all would have different opinions.

So I'm driving down the road today in Rockville MD and there in front of me is this car I have never seen before. A lump came into my throat when I realized it's the first R8 I've seen. It was silver and just gorgeous. It was driven by a mild mannered, looking older gent. I was totally jealous. I was driving my 13 y.o. stepdaughter home in my 993 that day and was very excited to see this car. I finally got right beside it as it was making a turn and beeped my car and gave him the thumbs up. WOW, what a looker that car is.

Are you guys now seeing the R8 on the road?

Steve R

I saw 5 of them at the Autobahn track in IL a month ago. Audi was doing a driver experience. They had 5 car haulers full of different audi's. I think they were selling the ultimate experience for $500 bucks and you got to drive the R8, but I don't think it was on the track, just autocross in the parking lot.
