New Mustang GT vs. my "old Porsche"

sigh,
so the mechanic did something to the car that gives it 340bhp, but you don't know what? hard to believe.
If you did run a 12.6, please post a scan of the timeslip.
thanks.

There's more to automobiles than mere straight line acceleration. I am fond of the new Mustang, if only because it is reminiscent of my first car (68 Stang). But I wouldn't drive a new one for the same reason I don't listen to the same music I listened to when I was 16. I know better now.
There's not a person on this board who couldn't have taken the money we used to buy our Porsches and bought a new Mustang GT instead. There's a slew of reasons why we didn't.

You should do the much "safer" braking test. Find a straight road with a barrier at the end. You take multiple passes with the Mustang next to you on hard acceleration with near-lockup braking at the end from speed. After repeated runs see who hits the wall first! ;-)
But seriously there are tons of cars out there that will "wup our asses" in the straights etc. There are less but still a bunch that will keep up and exceed our cars in the twisties. But as an overall package the 911 is hard to beat.
That all being said, one of the biggest differentials is the driver. A crappy driver in a 911 will get beaten by a very good driver in a vette or mustang. The person behind the wheel will greatly influence the final outcome and that is a variable that is very hard to measure.
Cheers,
Mike

I love the new mustangs. I think that and the Ford GT are two of the best moves Ford has made in many years. BUT, the mustang is what it is and the Porsche is what it is - and in 4 out of 5 categories, the 911 wins. The mustang MIGHT beat the 911 in a straight from-start race - and that's a close maybe, but in every other situation the 911 wins. Looks, handling, class, lineage, sound, whatever.
This reminds me of some thoughts I was having recently. I was reading one of the many articles about the new Audi R8 and every article I've seen calls it the new 911 foe. How many times have you heard/read that? <blank> is the new challenger to the Porsche. Every year another car company comes out with a car that's supposed to top the 911 as the ultimate 24/7 GT sports car and this has been going on for many years now. The bottom line is that the 911 is still the measuring stick that has yet to be replaced. Sorry to get off-topic. I don't mean to compare the 'stang to the R8 which I'm sure is a phenomenal car.

I had the exact same thought. In five years nobody will remember the Audi. But the 911 of 2012 will be playing in Bugatti Veyron territory for a tenth of the cost...

Well, it isn't exactly new, has 1000 miles on the speedometer - but I bought it new in 1995:
The new GT hasn't changed a thing except for its bigger stock wheels. However, I added a flashed computer ECU using the SVT Pro Racer software on my laptop which allows to change even the variable cam timing.
All I can say is, check out how long I've been shopping for a 993 versus "riding" in the Stang. Note that I said riding rather than driving, although by most folks I drive pretty hard as in Disney Thrill ride style. But the Porshe is an intuitive driver's car. The Stang is a car to be driven hard.
To each his own. But nowadays it isn't hard to find a car with horsepower and acceleration. What seperates the men from the boys is chassis dynamics.
Cheers,
Vic
