Default Help Splitting Wheels ...

I have searched, but was unable to find the answer I needed. Someone even asked a similar question on the "tire and wheel" forum yesterday and didn't get a response, so I though that I would ask the 993 forum. Here goes...

I have a set of Sport classic II's (which I think are made by BBS) that I want to remove the centers on and have refinished. The bolts look similar to torx head bolt, but have 12 points instead of the normal 6. Am I OK to use a torx bit if I can find one big enough or will this cause problems? If I need a special bit, where do I get it? Is there a Porsche or BBS part number? Lastly, what is the torque setting for when I reassemble them. I will also cross post this on the proper forum too. Thanks.

A torx might work but I wouldn't risk stripping the heads.

I bought a 12 point bit set from Harbor Freight and use if for all of the 12 point bolts on my longhood 911 (including flywheel bolts). It's not the greatest quality but works fine for the backyard mechanic such as myself. The kit of 6 sizes was under $10 IIRC.

And does anyone know the proper torque for tightening these when I reassemble?

That's the same as a 12pt. Try Harbor Freight, Sears, hardware store, maybe even Home Depot, etc.

I would measure the torque to break them loose to get a guideline (this will be a bit less than the seating torque by a small percentage). Then, check the bolts for residue from a threadlocker or something so you can see if they used anything during assembly.

Wheel Enhancement may be very helpful with these details as well.

Thanks for the useful info. I wasn't sure if this was a common tool that can be found in the normal places or something specialized. I actually have a Harbor Freight store here in town, although I generally prefer to buy better quality tools unless it is a one time thing. Actually, I hope this is a one time thing, but with 19 bolts per wheel, I think that I will try for something better than Harbor freight. I am a bit leery of using the unseating torque value, so I will call Wheel Enhancement. Thanks again for the info.

BBS's torque value for their RACE wheels is 145 in/lbs. They should be installed with no thread locking.

Jeff,
I second your thoughts on Harbor Freight for anything other than a pry bar...

Try a search on Ebay under "triple square".

You can get a set of triple square bits from Pep Boys for around $11. They don't have socket ends like Bruce's pic, though.

Cool

They're Triple Squares and are available at Pep Boys. Do not use power tools to turn the triple square, they will strip easily. Gently/manualy do it by hand. Torque to put them back is 145~155 Inch Lbs, cross tourqed with half the value first for intial torquing.

All the help has been great... Thanks. Now if I could only find someone who carried these locally. I have tried Pep Boys, Autozone, Kragen, Sears, NAPA, and even Harbor Freight with no luck. I guess I am going to have to order it online.

I got mine from NAPA. The salesman didn't know what I was asking for (triple square) but I found a set hanging on the rack in the store. Might try looking around the local stores, they might have one they don't know about.

Search the internet for "Lisle". This is a company that makes triple squares with socket attachment. Very good quality.

Sears carries Lisle (at least where I live they do...)
