Default Thoughts on a 968?

I was thinking about picking up a 968 coupe while I'm 933-less. I would use it for a fair weather daily driver and DE car. I like the looks, and they are unique. I also imagine they are more reliable than a 951 or even a 3.2 911, due to age. Your thoughts are welcome.

Thanks,

Shawn

They are great cars. although they will not light your fire like a 911. They are holding their value very well, so a good example would allow you to drive for a while with little or no loss.

I'd opt for an older 911 first, having spent 15 years in a 944 DD.

Awesome car. You should get one while you wait. Up side is it's sturdy and handles well, downside is that it's even smaller inside than a 993, esp the back seat. Oh, another upside - big *** hatch to carry around your extra wheels and tires. Or groceries....

If you can find one already prep'd for DE's then jump on it. They hold their own rather nicely against the likes of 911s, 993s, 993TTs, 996s, etc. on the track. Check out some of the PCA web sites for ax/tt results and you'll see the light.

I think all of us here wish we would have bought that 993 - RS look that sold for pennies earlier this week.

I've never owned one although I loved the way they looked when I was in highschool and bought the wannabe RX7. The only comment I can make about them is that at AX, 944s and 968s seem to oversteer a lot compared to 911s. I also agree with that 911s will hold value much better and love the 80's looks and rough feel of the 3.2 carreras.

Always been a fan of the hatch. My first P car was a 944. Probably the best handling 4 banger this side of the Lotus. I then graduated to the 968; a bit fatter but great road/track cars, you'd love it.

Get an S2. Few less HP, but also a few less pounds, and a few less dollars.

Makes a great track car.

Great car to learn how to drive fast. Cheaper to maintain than an older 911.
Get some track experience, then come racing in F.

Great car, but very very rare.

A rennlister had one in F at Sebring last weekend. He did very well in it. Podium in the sprint. He's been racing it for a few years.

I have 964 and then bought a 968 to play with last year. I spent 18 grand on a beautiful car, then spent 10 grand more to make it near perfect. I ended up selling it because I did not have time to drive it, and my wife would not touch it. It was Red; if it were Silver it would be my daily driver.

That said, be prepred for a "crude" feeling compared to a modern car. All that slop and and creaking goes away at high speeds, but when you first start it, and when you are in slow traffic, it feels like an antique.

As for DE's, the car is wonderful. Any idiot can be fast in a 968 without fear of spinnning like in a 911. Also, the hatch is nice becuase you can haul all your DE related stuff to the track. You can sleep in the car on long trips by reclining the seats. It is really nice.

Expect to pay 15k or so for a good one and 5k to 10k to make it right. It would be no fun at all to drive a beater 968, you would be better with an old VW GTI if that were the case.

Have fun.

I owned several of these watercooled front engined cars including 924Ts 951s and 968......there will always be some knockers but to me there are so much fun. The 968 is a well balance fun car to drive.....go to 968.net for the low down....very much like this board but with a little more infighting.....lots of good tips and knopwledge though..........My last 968 was a daily driver for 18 months.....it was great, a nice tight car, I replaced suspension (like the 993s the suspension goes) and chipped it.....it was a quick car - ok not as quick as the 993, but hey!!! and very nice to drive....pay around $15 for a mid mileage car that has been well maintained and in my view you will have a bargain
