Default PORSCHE BOSE SPARE TIRE SUBWOOFER

I just obtained a Bose subwoofer that fits in the spare tire area. Has anyone tried this before and can it be retrofitted to our cars?
Thanks in advance
Ron

It might be good for entertaining the homies on the street as your styling down the boulevard and looking at your hood bouncing to the rhythm of the bass. But I doubt if the sound quality would be very good in the passenger compartment.

I am not sure what porsche it was installed originally. Does anyone know where these were installed? The guy who gave it to me does car radio repairs and had no idea where it came from.

It seems like it would only work well if the spare tire was in the passenger compartment. Maybe it's from a 924/944/928??

How would the sound get to the passenger compartment? I can't imagine this could possibly work.

Maybe you cut a hole in the firewall.

LOL, is that the same mod as drilling the crash bar for weight reduction?

I remember seeing a shop in NY/NJ(not sure which exactly) area called AKA Kustom that did a custom fiberglass enclosure in the spare tire area, but that was at least 4 years ago. Not sure if they're still around...techlaw (993 owner) had a killer system from them, not sure if he's around anymore either. Mrclifton (local 993 owner) at one time had the bazooka sub in the trunk, and it sounded okay, believe it or not. I think he sold his car, and no longer posts on Rennlist, though.

If you put a sub enclosure in the trunk, you will get some bass, better than none, but you're probably much better off just getting the enclosure from caraudioinnovations.com imho.

If it's the bose sub enclosure from a current model Porsche, it will not fit in the 993 without building some kind of custom fabrication, imho.

Sweet idea. And you'd be creating more legroom.

Seems like a good idea. I would have thought it was crazy before I saw the new Audi Q7, and their innovative use of limited space. When you purchase the Bose upgrade, there is a sub that goes right in the spare tire, just like what you are proposing. Knowing that a team of highly qualified German engineers came up with it to work in an Audi, I think you have a great idea here. Go to your local Audi dealer to have a closer look, and if you're in South Florida, feel free to come in and see me at Champion (Coral Springs) and I'll show you first hand! Let us know how it works...

Does the Q7 have a firewall separating the driver from the subwoofer?

Its more than possible. Low frequencies i.e. long waves can easily permeate the firewall, but like buying a house its, location- location- location. In other words this will work well in some cars better than others depending on the layout of the car. Not to mention the equipment used. And in some cars the sound wlll be better outside the car than inside. So much for stealth- if thats important.

I have a powered sub in the trunk rear quarter panel in my Audi (coincidence? No its an old S4) and the sound is excellent. Far better than the sound from the identical sub on the rear floor of the 993. Would it sound better in the 993's trunk? Possibly but I think not, Then again I haven't tried it because:

a. I'm satisfied with the sound with the sub where it is
b. the 993 is a poor (by comparison) audio chamber IMO
c. with X-pipes and Cup mufflers audio quality is of secondary import to me
and finally
d. what would I do if I got a flat tire?

When I purchased my cab, the previous owner had the subwoofer installed in the trunk area and it sounded great. However, it took all of my usuable trunk space so I moved the subwoofer to an enclosure behind my seat. Still sounds great, but not as good as before. Go figure! If it wasn't for the trunk space, I'd move it back there again.

are there any holes in the firewall to "port" the sound thru? my e36ic, i've got a sub in the spare tire compartment- no spare anymore- and it didn't sound any good until i removed some plastic behind the rear seat's arm rest. if anything, i'll try putting an enclosure in my 993's trunk, wire it to my other car's amp, and see if the sound makes it into the cab w/o cutting anything.

fwiw, my best friend used to own a stereo shop where they did a 993 cab with the enclosure in the trunk. he said he remembers cutting nothing out and it sounded great. thing is, i never got to hear the car so who knows.

i'll run the test next chance i get.
