Default High mileage 993 purchase?

I am planning on upgrading from my 86 carrera to a 993. I am going to have a PPI done before purchasing, which will yield more info.

I am considering this car:
A 1995 cab with 105k miles for $23,000. The car needs new brakes and stereo.
Looks good, few rock chips and scratches with clean carfax.

I think the price is good, but i am concerned about the mileage. Is 105k miles just asking for problems?

thanks

If the PPI pans out, thats a great deal....buy it! Brakes will run you $1100 plus labor and a stereo......?
Probably no more or less problems than a 35K mile car. Just have it gone thru well and then drive it like you stole it Get it for closer to $20K and you will have

If PPI uncovers nothing drastic, you're golden.

Miles would not scare me, but for me would want full or nearly complete history of records. Make sure the PPI is done by someone that knows 993's very well, and should be there during the inspection. I would also get leak down and compression check. Will probably a few hundred dollars for a complete PPI and check for any major accidents. Good luck.

are valve guide wear a problem with these higher 993s, like they are on the 80's carreras?

I have 94k miles on the my 86, i have only had it about two years. no major problems, but it does have burn oil.

How long do these 993 engines last and what's the replacement cost on them?

The only reason I'd fear something with over 100k on it is I'll be using mine as a daily driver...not insane mileage but still enough that it adds up. Probably 10-15k a year.

The replacement cost of the engine is ridiculous, around $30k, but a top end rebuild is all you'll probably need, and can be had for $6k. I'm daily driving mine, 12k miles last year, I'm at 91k now. You won't regret it if you do get into a 993.

These are bullet-proof cars.... get a good inspection on it and you will be fine (full disclosure: I didn't do a ppi....the PO had full service records)

if you do get it, you must post pictures!

My '87 had a rebuild at 116K due to worn valve guides & burning oil. My 993 had a rebuild at 120K that started with a leak at timing chain cover. More of a "while we are in there", as the valve guides were only half worn. It mostly depends on type of driving and consequent heat buildup.

At $23K, I feel most of the possible $7K rebuild within next 20K or so miles is already in the price.

Default One more thing...

Godxilla,

I answered above, but to help you out a little further (hopefully) - I am linking a post I put here on Rennlist before I purchased my 993. < LINK HERE >

Do not pay attention to how much I paid. I think John D. (Rennlist site owner) and myself (and possibly a few others) have gotten ridiculous deals on our cars.

The price is NOT IMPORTANT at all.... you are getting a STEAL IF THE CAR IS LESS THAN $30,000 and is in good running condition! THAT, is all you need to know

Do the PPI, and you will be able to sleep better at night. Do a search to find a good one in your area, there are many threads about this.

And lastly, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY, the day you get your car (whether this one or the next), get your membership here. I dont think I have been to another board that has as much membership-value as this site. Dont think twice about this (NO PPI REQUIRED!!!!)

Good luck, and know there are dozens of people rooting for you to get a 993 and join this family! After that, there are Rennlist "representatives" that will show you the "way" to spend your money on upgrades!! LOL!

At low 20’s you will have the same driving experience as those who paid low 30’s. And if you drive it for 60,000 miles it will likely cost about the same to own it but sell closer to what you paid for it. I paid $22,000 for a 1995 with 155,000 miles on it and I felt good doing it...and still do.

I think a strong, $20k range 993 is the best way to enjoy these cars. Less worry about dings, scrapes and paint chips and more focus on the driving experience. Hope it works out well for you. I looked at a 95 SY for $25k with 90k mi and regret not having bought it.

Default High Mileage

Dont worry about the high mileage the one I bought has 208000. It runs strong no leaks, I do all the work myself and it saves me a ton. If you are close we change out brakes rotors with you. Vertex is the place I have found to get parts. Talk with Charles at Vertex.

Thanks for all the great input!

I just did a CARFAX report on it and it had an "...accident or other incident, Damage to right front pillar, Damage to left front pillar" at 90k miles.

I recently saw another 95 cab for $28k with 67k miles, a clean CARFAX, new brakes, new tires, new top. Im thinking the lower mileage may be worth extra $5k?
Also, are 1995s the way to go because of the CEL issues?

thanks

My 1995 993 Cab had 97k miles on it when I purchased it last year for £22k
The car is running very well - Its a daily drive and I do approx 250miles a week.
