If the 993 never existed...
If the 993 never existed it means there was a rip in the space-time continuum, in which case I probably would never have existed...and thus the question of what else I would be driving would be moot.
Regarding the vette...been there-done that. One of my buddies drives a 96' 993 4S. I used to park by him and give him **** about how much faster my car was than his. It was weird, no matter how hard I tried to to get him worked up he would never engage in a debate over our cars.
He would just smile and remain humble. As I grew more interested in the 911's he would always answer my questions, but never brag. I didn't understand the whole air cooled verse's water cooled deal....I didn't understand the 4 or the S stuff, but he would say, "come here" (having me stand 10 pace's behind his car) and he would then say, "doesn't that fat *** look cool".
This education of his went on for a couple of years, and during that time I studied and watched the 993 prices hold while 996 continued to depreciate. I sold the vette 9 months ago and got my 993 three months ago.
Now---duh---I understand why he never engaged in my challenges. He simple knew he had a better car. The excitement and thrill I get from driving my 993 is in no comparison to the vette. The vette was fine and served it's purpose, but I will probably never go back.
