Default Cloudy headlights ... solution?

My "new" winter driver is an Audi A6, which sports the typical milky looking headlight lenses ... hey, just like most of the 993's I've had!

So, I was looking through the board at Audi World and discovered the following post, which had remarkable results from a headlight polishing kit from a company called MicroSurface. I bought the kit and will do my own A6 lights tomorrow, but I thought the link might be of interest. Since the Audi lights are also by Bosch, presumably this might brighten up the lights on the 993 as well ... if anyone dares to try it.

FYI, the kit contains numerous grades of sandpaper for wet sanding, plus some flannel cloths and a fine polish to finish up with.

Here's a link to the kit ... $12.95.

Kit online (no affiliation)

YMMV!

I have used the Meguire's plastic window polish and cleaner for cloudy lenses on my former BMW's. I bought the stuff at first to keep the plastic window on the convertible top clear, but found that it works well as a light plastic polish on lenses and other clear plastic surfaces. YRMV.

I don't think that will do anything for our headlights since our headlights are glass. Audis are plastic I,m pretty sure.

Thats exactly correct. Our headlights start to get "foggy"(yellowish) from inside.
No amount of polishing will solve the problem.

It won't work on the 993 but it will work on my Ford Expedition! Thanks

Exactamundo, Eric.

I decided to just buy new lenses for $55 each, shipped from autohausaz.com. Now I need to get some lens covers.

Yes, I recently did the exact same thing. The best $110 I've spent on my car yet!!

The Audi lights are acyrlic ... I wasn't aware that the 993 is actual glass. Bet the 996 is plastic ;-)

The acrylic ones don't respond to the typical polishes, either, tried that last weekend. Wet sanding required.

The Audi units you can't even get the lens for, you have to buy the whole xenon headlight and it costs a bundle, so $55 is dirt cheap on the 993.

With new lenses, how do you remove the old one? Mr. Dremel?

Agreed but... if you dismantle the lights (see Adrian's book) and spray a liberal quantity of white vinegar on the glass, let soak overnight... you will see better.

Some used headlight lenses are on eBay and I was doing some research when I found this old thread. I will try the white vinegar trick tonight.

On a similar note will the polishes discussed earlier in the thread work on my "milky" or is it "faded" red plastic tail light assemblies? I have a high mileage car with coastal exposure, she was repainted but the light lenses all around are old looking...

Thanks.
