As with anything, it's the stuff you don't know that cuts into the bottom line. If this thing is still rolling around on original shocks at 128K miles, you can safely surmise NOTHING has been changed. Thus, the "fear of the unknown" discount would skyrocket for me. If I could tell that this car's been beaten on like a rented mule (and by all accounts, it has been), then you have to know shocks, brakes and tilted guages aren't the only things wrong with it. As we all know, turning a $15,000 993 into a $40,000 993 is far more than $25,000 in headaches.
I think $15K was generous. I would have redefined the meaning of low-ball.

Lessee, that comes to $5,700 and I haven't even talked about suspension bushings or the tired engine that will need refreshening. This is also asuming that the clutch won't let go at any moment. $15,000 was beyond generous.
That stuff you're smokin' must be damn good. Please go back and read what I wrote. Somewhere in there, the phrase rode hard and put away wet was used.

I think your best argument is the engine.
You disappoint me if you can't change out your own brakes, shocks, valve cover gasket, etc., without having to pay for someone to do it for you. You race right? So I know you already have the tools and know how to do this. Why act like you don't?
The market will determine the price of this particular car, and every other car put up for sale and sold. I think the market will ultimately determine that the 15k was a couple grand low.

Another Rennlister asked for someone to look at a car for him in NJ in another thread. I volunteered, as I have done for several others, and we talked via PM, where I learned what car he was interested in and who was selling it. After I told him of examples of people who bought cars there (one ran for 3 weeks, then major overhaul time), and about their usual cars, he moved on and saved me the 30 mile drive to look at junk.

Considering there is a bid for $18,900 on Ebay, its now a $24k investment with all the work that needs to be done. If you were a car dealer and someone offered you $15k and someone else offered you $18,900, which offer would you take?
It appears that the market is demanding more for a car in that condition as it sits today. Bad for those wanting to buy, good for those selling.

The thing that I don't understand in many of the arguments here is that YOUR time is valuable too, is that right? So even if you do much of the work yourself it still is a substantial outlay of capital. Lets do a little simple math... Making $100k/year equals $50 hour (2000 hour work year). If you spent 150 hours working on this car you lose $7500 if it takes a mechanic 60% of the time you took to do the work that you would at $75 per hour that equals $6750 in labor alone, a savings of $750. This does not include the purchase of some new tools (and you know you will have too) nor the amortized cost of tools you might have already purchased. On all fronts this car is a losing proposition (but what car isn't?) unless is is substantially cheaper than $15k. If its to fulfill your passion of working on cars then thats much different. I personally enjoy making furniture. The cost of the raw timbre, the amortized cost of the insanely expensive tools plus my time is far more expensive then buying a custom handmade piece from an artisan. Simple repairs are one thing, complex ground up (as it sounds here) is a whole other ball-o-wax.

My passion is travel and vacation. As a matter of fact, the only DIY thing I enjoy is what I will be doing next week-swimming up to the swim up bar in Puerto Vallarta and ordering a cocktail. Also doing the lazy mans fishing charter and dont do jack but real them in!!
