I have had indirect experience with Autotechnik as the PO of my car utilized them for service for thankfully only a few bits and pieces. They replaced GOD knows how many headlight bulbs bacause they'd always blow (yes it was the right front, lol) when it it a known fix to replace the snap ring (or whatever its called) to hold the bulb in place. Couple dollar part if I'm not mistaken. PO spent way too much money on that "simple" fix. They also R/R'd the A/C system and botched the installation of the alternator where the alternator and battery which was a brand new optima needed to be replaced (my first Porsche DIY, I never knew my hands were THAT fat) because the alternator destroyed the battery. Fun times... Other than those two things the only other thing they did was oil changes. Clearly I got off easy.

Exactly. Is that what you were thinking Mark? Did you chide me for buying the high mile iris blue 993?

Buy it, strip it and sell off the used parts to help buy a new suspension and thrash the rest of the hell out of it.

John,

I don't recall giving you grief for the high miles 993. If I did, I'll have to talk to my assertiveness trainer. I was chiding myself for not buying your blue 993. But I had just bought the 997 and was maxed out for room and wasn't thinking of another daily driver P-car.

The 993/964 is for a daily driver. I am quite happy with the silver 993 as my track car.

Pls forgive the hi-jack. Is this true about the underside of the hood, that it should be matte finish? Never heard that before. Thanks.

Bruce,

This is what Andreas told me, so it must be true!

Bruce,
I may be way off base, but every low-mileage, unmolested 993 that I've looked at, has been this way. The underside of the hood is body-colored, but not glossy, and has the cheapy-looking paper option sticker near the latching mechanism.

This car had a glossy hood, no sticker (or evidence of prior adhesive) and a gnat or two stuck in the paint.....

A new term is born: RennFax.

As in, "Can someone in the Chippewa Falls area do a RennFax for me?"

I love it.

No offense, but I don't see any major problems that would warrant a low ball $15,000 offer.

Most of the issues you mentioned have easy fixes.

I think $15,000 is reasonable in light of the $5000 needed immediately plus the strong likelihood of it needing a $5000 engine rebuild (due to the oil leak and/or the weak power output). That makes it a $25,000 car, which is about right. But as we all know, there's probably somebody out there who doesn't recognize these costs and will say "sweet- a $20,000 993!"

Jim,
As they say, "You had to be there."

The engine was bathed in oil. When I took a flashlight and looked into the void under the intake manifold, the top of the engine tin (both sides) was glistening with oil. The driver's side valve covers were drenched, the heat exchangers dripping, and the engine tray had at least three pounds of oil-soaked detritus on it. By the way, the engine tray had been carelessly slid under the '80s Carrera a few feet away. But I saw it and the amount of crud on it.

As Mark mentioned, the car rode like an old Eldorado. It literally wallowed down the road. By their appearance alone, the shocks were factory original. At 128,000 miles.

I think Mark would have grabbed the car had it shown evidence of at least a modicum of care. It did not. The air filter told the whole story.

His offer was generous.

The engine deal may warrant that type of deduction, but complaining about tilted gauges, brake pads, and shocks on a car with 120k+ with an asking under 20k seems nit picky.

Just my opinion. Not a personal attack.
