Default Wow - what a difference with my new 4-poster

Ok - it's finally DONE!!!!!!

I ordered a BendPak 4-poster a few weeks ago - and yesterday I finally got to use the finished product.

What an effort

I wouldn't say the instructions were great - but they're better than the ones you get from a Bilstein or H&R suspension kit

The biggest issue was the sheer weight of everything - the ramps themselves are about 350lbs. - and it took four guys to prop each up onto the lift bars - we all came away with bruised shoulders.

The other very interesting bit was - I had no idea that these lifts require a compressed air feed to release the safety locks.

There were also no instructions on installing the optional hydraulic jack - which works great - until I realized that the warning notes on the jack again referred to compressed air.

In the end, I already had a compressor, but what I did was to run air lines throughout the garage, and now I have hanging air hoses in 3 locations in the garage.

So, this is the first big step in my garage reno - which is going to be dedicated to my auto fetishes

Here are some pics:

Let me know if you can't see them.

Enrico,

Did you already modify the garage doors to track higher or was that how they were originally installed.

Looks nice......now clean that garage.

looks great Enrico! Is there enough space to park another vehicle underneath for storage purposes, or does BendPak offer another set up for parking purposes? Curious about the garage door/ceiling req's too!

Thanks for sharing.

Nice! Just watch the distance between your car's roof and the garage ceiling whenever you raise the car....

Ditto on the height questions.

How high is your ceiling?
What height are your roll-up doors?
Can you fit another car under the lift?

Very nice!

Nice install - it does take a little muscle to get the columns up, doesn't it?

I'm curious about the clearance as well.. how close does your car get to that big and heavy wooden beam you got up there? I'll bet there isn't much clearance!!

I hadn't seen the pictures of when you unpacked it.. that must of been much more work than I gave you credit for! LOL

BTW.. that's a gorgeous turbo you got in the background!

Did you order it directly from Bend Pak in the US? Or do they have a Canadian distributor? And if the former, how much hassle was the border stuff? I've had aggro in the past with couriers and charges and other assorted nonsense...

You bet it is And thanks for helping me take down the wood beam!

Yes, wheels are easily removed. There is a picture of the hydraulic jack on the site now and you can see the RR wheel off the car - very easy to do. I can't believe how much easier than working on the floor like I was used to! Price wise, I can't say compared to a scissor lift. The main lift runs about $3K (Cdn - but I believe it's same as US sale price), but doesn't include the hydraulic jacks. I show one in the photo, there's another one that was backordered and will be in soon. Using both jacks I can actually lift the entire car off the ramps and do work. The catch is that the jacks (2 of them) cost almost as much as the lift. So, in the end, likely the scissor lift is much cheaper. That being said, I've always wondered about clearance on the scissor lift so I'm not sure if this affords any better.

Oh yeah, before I forget, I haven't installed them yet, but this baby comes with casters - that's right, I can move it around if I want to put it in the middle of the garage - pretty nifty

Did you already modify the garage doors to track higher or was that how they were originally installed.
I modified the tracks for the lift - I don't know of any builder that would make the extra effort to do that unless you've paid for it I had a local company do the work, the original doors were wood and we had mushrooms (not the smoking kind) growing out of them - so we replaced the doors with insulated ones while we were at it.

Is there enough space to park another vehicle underneath for storage purposes
Yes, no problem fitting another car - you can see from the updated photos the Passat VR6 (which is FOR SALE - shameless plug - for whomever is interested - to make room for my new old 1988 M6).

How high is your ceiling?
The ceiling height I have is about 10 ft. give or take an inch or so. As you can see from the freshly uploaded pics, once I move the fluoro light at top, I'll be able to raise the car another few inches. Height is perfect for working under.

The lift was ordered via Babco Sales in Vancouver (800-661-5313). They were great - I couldn't believe the price - the best price I found on US sites was about $3K - they sold it for about $3K Cdn. Shipping was $50 to Toronto (cheap) - and I rented the UHaul to get it home. If they ship to your residence it's another $100 - but you have to have a way to get it off a flatbed - their shipper (Reimer) does NOT have any lift-gate trucks.

Oh yeah, one more thing - garage door openers. You can see from the top of the car that if I had an opener - it would be quite a problem. I removed my original Sears openers, and I'm having the company who installed the doors put in jack-shaft door openers which work on the spring in the garage doors.

Looks good! It will be interesting to compare this to a two post lift...I just ordered a 9000lb two post lift from Greg Smith Equipment and hopefully will be installing it by Christmas....can't wait!
