Default PPI problem with seller

I am finalizing the purchase of a used 993 that is 2,000 miles away. The plan is to get a PPI early this week and fly down Friday to look at it and complete the deal. The seller will only let me do a PPI at his local mechnics shop. Not sure why. The sirens are going off in my head. The local shop could be owned by his brother/friend ... or since as he has implied he collects cars the shop may not want to lose the rest of his business. Just a check, am I being to paranoid here?

I am paying for part of the car with a Capital One check. I have agreed not to have the car picked up for transport until the funds have cleared into his account as he was nervous about the process. I have used Capital One 4-5 times with no issues as I explained to him but the seller is concerned. I feel I am being fair and trying to work with him since we don't know each other so there is that trust issue so I will delay having the car picked up. Not a big deal assuming the cars stays locked up. But not having an option for picking the place of the PPI is concerning.

Thoughts?

If you're allowing him to let the funds clear, what is he worrying about? He would have the car, title and money.

The bigger issue is the PPI. Don't let him bully or cajole you into using his mechanic. That's a load of horsesh*t. Do your due diligence and find a good shop out there that doesn't have a relationship with him.

Good luck.

if you can't choose the shop for the PPI.. keep looking! By NO MEANS use his local mechanic. If he's the ONLY mechanic in town, keep looking for the next car.

Your paying for it, you should call the shots on where it's done. Post where the car is, and see if any of the members can help you with a reputable shop that hasn't done the work on it. Asking his shop to critique their own work is asking for a problem.
