PPI problem with seller
#17
Sounds like an inexperienced seller. I don't know what a "Capital One" check is, but why not pay him with a cashier's check as he could easily validate it at his bank and the funds transfer the next day. As long as you're flying in, hand him the cashier's check at the same time he's signing over the title, then take the car to the loading dock (or the PPI shop) and secure it for pick up.
Some folks don't like to send their cars to some mechanic they don't know for a PPI, but he'll just have to get over it, especially if the mechanic you've selected has a good reputation in Porsche circles.
This isn't nearly as difficult as the seller is making it for himself and you.

If you really like this car for some reason, then before you run you could ask this board whether they know anything about the shop the seller would let do the ppi. If the answer comes back "never heard of them" or "run away" then I agree, walk. You really need to have the car looked at by someone who (1) knows the 993 and (2) will give you an independent opinion.
A seller could be legitimately squeamish about allowing their car to be wrenched by someone they never heard of. But if you have a reputable p-car shop, there should be no good reason the seller would refuse to let them do the ppi.

I had the same thing a while back for a CAB 100 miles away from my home - rang the garage the owner recommended.....they had nothing but praise for the owner and car.....Still took a freind who is a specialist with me to view the car and found it had been in an accident with major work done and still needed to be completed.....needless to say I walked away from the sale.....but it still cost me a long journey / time and favours from my mate.
PPI should be on your terms not the sellers....or....save your money and find another car closer to home.
Good luck

Speaking from experience ($5K plus worth of experience), if you can't choose who does the PPI, walk away from this deal. The only other way to have this work, is ask the shop recommended by the seller to give you a 3 year, 25,000 mile warranty. (You know that is not going to happen)
I have accepted Capital One checks several times, never had a problem with them.
Good luck.

Update: The seller has agreed to let me pick the place of the PPI as long as it was not the local Porsche dealer which he feels is very poor. He got back to me and told me he had a friend who was selling his Aston Martin and the place he took it for a PPI disconnected some wires which caused other issues. He said he was just afraid of having someone he didn't know or trust messing with the car.

Good for you. You're paying for it, so it's your choice. And you DEFINITELY don't want to use his shop- huge red flags there.
Hope you can find a knowledgable shop within reasonable distance to him.

This still sounds like BS to me. I would contact the local PCA chapter and ask for 3 recs for the PPI and pick one. As for the Capital One Check have his Bank check it out.

TRW: It might be intelligent for you to trust your own judgement and not make decisions on presumptions. From my purview and based upon the limited information you've provided, walking away from the deal sounds as valid as assuming he is **** or someone who has had a bad experience in the past. I've owned many cars and I've ran into this in the past more than once. There are times when I walked because I didn't feel comfortable with the sellers demands/representations and times when I was able to overcome the seller's insecuritylack of trust/inexperience. I do agree that you should not let him choose who performs the PPI and I think you should not make rash decisions if its a special car or a good deal. If it isn't, then there are always other cars and maybe one will come along closer to you. Good luck and hope things work out well for you either way.
