OK. Thanks to all who responded here. For those who are interested, we found out that the '97 radio will work in a pre '97 car but in fact the background lighting will not (without some minor tweaking!). Mea culpa. All lights function normally if installed in a '97-98. The buyer has already shipped the unit back to me so it is for sale again!!! At this rate I might even donate it to a worthy home...
