Guys,
thanks for all the kind words...now down to business.....
(btw...I promise pics this w/e).
The car sounds great without the sound package. I ordered the Big ovals from Josh, and want to modify or change the air filter cover.
should I just remove my cover and drill it like the rest of you, or should I buy the MSP air filter cover (holes and chromed look intake) from carnewal.com...or both.
objective: more deeper throttle for the buck!

Depends on if you consider yourself a purist or not. You can achieve the same results from what I have been told driling the box yourself, but the factory MSP is OEM

Just drill the holes if all you want is more noise..........dont forget you may wish to save some money for a different exhaust which will REALLY give you more noise.........if you are standard you will notice the difference....go listen to some of the aftermarket ones before you buy........and dont expect more horsepower, just more noise!!!!

Take your own cover off and look inside (I have not looked at mine) as somepeople have said the hole pattern is formed and makes it easy to see where to drill.........others have gone for a cut away....there are some pics in the archives somewhere.....but this may cause some probs depending on how much you cut away as some have say the cover then deforms......

Like they said from a functional standpoint there's no difference. Depends if you like buying OEM or if you don't care. I'd recommend saving your money for some RSR mufflers!!

Another option is to get out your dremel tool and cut the side off the air box cover thru which all the holes are drilled, leaving intact the intake oval and the opening for the brake dust tube on the front.
I cut along the corner edging where the flat top/back/ bottom portion meets with the vertical side (right hand side as you face the engine) all the way around. Once completed you can visualize nearly the entire air filter thru the open siding, yet it remains stiff enough to use original clamps to hold it to the airbox and you have the original air intake opening and the original opening for reinsertion of the clutch dust tube.
This modification seems to make the car go faster. But that sensation might be my perception from the significantly louder growl/howl which is emitted from the engine compartment at and above about 3500 rpm at WOT. my $.02 worth.

If you use the hole pattern on the inside of the box and drill from inside out you will have little protruding plastic pieces on the outside of your box.
If you use the pattern in this doc and tape it to the outside and drill outside in, it will look smooth on the outside.

It's very easy.
If you have a 6 speed you will need to remove the "snorkel tube" from the front of the air cleaner housing. Just squeeze the sides where they connect and it should come off with a little work. Unsnap the two clips holding the air box cover on and the cover will come off.
