Since one of your major concerns is unforseen repairs (esp costly ones) IMHO your priority should be on being very, very confortable with the history of the car you decide to buy...maintenance records, owner records, etc. This would put priority on cars where you have met the owner, am comfortable w/him or her, and ideally they are **** enthusiasts...rather than cars that are available at a dealer across the country or on ebay. I think if I were in your shoes, I would look for "cars w/perfect owners and records" as a priority over with perfect condition/color/price, etc. Most buyers tend to do the opposite...look for the perfect car and then cross their fingers on the history and background.

Good luck in your search!
