Question Air pump

How do you know when it is not working...I don't hear that noise that the flap makes at start up

You mean the air injection pump? I can hear mine run on cold starts. You could test for +12v at the pump - it's under the intake manifold toward the passenger seats, on the right-hand side. If you have 12V there on cold start, I'd say your pump has failed.

Yes, it runs for a minute or so then turns off. Cold starts only.

The electric air pump in our 993 sounds like a vaccum cleaner when running.

Will this affect the engine performance if not working?

No, but your CEL should come on as the result of it being not working.

I thought 95 don't have cel issues...this morning I ran it for 1/2 hour after taking my daugther to school shut the car off then on again in the accessory position and I could hear the pump working, but not at first start this morning could it be that the outside temperture is a factor.

The 95s have air pump, just don't have the OBD-2 system to tell you that the air pump is not working. What you should hear is only the air pump working on cold engine start up, not when it is warmed up.

If your car is warm and you hear a pump running, its most likely the HVAC fan running, blowing air through the heat exchangers. Stand in back of the car without shoes on, engine running -- feel excessive hot air? Thats it.

Your air injection pump will only run for maybe 30 seconds on cold starts only. You wont be able to feel any air blowing from that one..
