I had the same experience so I went to Home Depot and picked out a few brass connectors to replace the plastic bits with. Works great.
For that matter, any clear bottle would work for this application!

I went to the dollar store and got a couple clear graduated plastic bottles, drilled a hole slightly smaller then the aquarium hose I had and just stuck the hose inside all the way to the bottom. Cheap and works great plus you can see how much fluid ounces you drain.
