Default Distributor Belt Replacement

I replaced this belt today. I wasn't looking forward to trying to pull the distributor from the engine, but I tried this little "rolling head pry bar" that I had in my toolbox, and it came out very easily. The collective wisdom of this board made for an easy DIY.https://rennlist.com/forums/newthrea...ewthread&f=58#

How long did it take you? I'm thinking of tackling this myself soon.

I took about four hours, but I worked slowly and carefully. It is important to get the two rotors in sych, and I found it took a bit of fiddling. I also clean stuff as I go along, so it takes a little more time.

Yeah I'd be paranoid about getting them lined up perfectly, don't want to mess up the timing

I changed my distributor belt a while ago when my car had 120 000km on the clock (75000mi?) and honestly the old belt was in perfect condition.

the old one yes the new one I placed was from pelican parts. If I remember well, 8$ for the belt against 700 euros for a Porsche exchange!
And if you do a search, you'll find here the part number for the pin you have to drill out to disassemble the heads. Curiously, that par is available from Porshce. I was the first one to order that part at my dealer shop

My tip for getting the two rotors aligned and set to the right position when putting the dist. back into the engine.... first, while the dist. is still on the engine, I marked on the dist. casting where the two rotor contacts are pointing. Then as I pulled the dist. out, I noted where one of the rotor contacts pointed just as the dist. gears disengage. With the new belt installed the rotor contacts must align with the two marks on the casting. Incidently, I used a roll pin that fit the hole after I drilled out the OEM pin. Putting the dist. back in, I started with the rotor cotact pointing in the direction where the gears disingaged. As long as you don't bump (rotate) the crank, you should be fine. Don't forget to lubricate the wear points in the advance mechanism.

Good Luck!!!

Bosch/Porsche uses the same rollpin on their single (6pt) distributors for the early 911s.

It's about a dollar for 3 of them from Pelican.
