My mechanic (I am not a mechanic), that installed my GHL exhaust has suggested that I should drill the airbox, about one hour of labor.

This should help performance with the new exhaust?

A mechanic was trying to charge you 1 hour of labor to do that? Who was it? I'm in Alpharetta as well. You are welcome to come to my house and I drill it for you. It takes 20 minutes and a beer at most.

Do the 20 minutes and a beer.....don't let a mechanic have all the fun.

Bah... don't drill, cut it around the edges for full exposure ala' fabspeed. Never had so much fun with my Dremel cutoff wheel!

Nice job Jack. Creative pattern. Makes me want to get another airbox cover and do something more creative.

I was just having some fun with my new $11 Harbor Freight hole saw kit. I think I used every blade in the kit to get maximum intake suckage.

I had a 964RSA with a Fabspeed lid. The drilled lid seeems to be equally loud.

Cabrio993 - I'll take it...You have the drill/saw, I'll bring the beer...what's your flavor?

Will this help with the performance....I didn't notice much difference when the new exhaust was installed, althought the sound of the GHL exhaust is fantastic !

Bob,

Just PM'd you back. Anytime is fine. I'll be around this weekend.

About the performance, I say maybe 0.0001 hp, but the sound at WOT over 5K rpms makes it feel like you gain at least 50!

The combination of your exhaust sound with some intake sounds mixed in there makes for a great wailing at high rpm's.

I have another lid that I snatched from eBay that which I got to play with it. We can saw that one open like the Supercup one and give it a try.

Just take the whole thing off and use some socket holders to clip the air filter on - while your at it take the clutch vent tube off and just let it vent to the atmosphere...

Jack... that is the coolest airbox drilling pattern I've ever seen! You should quickly patent it before some aftermarket guy copies it. I can see the ad now...

Asymmetrical vent ports create optimal airflow patterns. Larger diameter ports allow maximum airflow quantity while smaller ports have been designed using sophisticated computer simulations to create micro bursts of air currents that shape and guide the airflow from the larger ports into a virtual air funnel. The final result is a positive air pressure induction netting a gain of 35 horsepower at the rear wheels with absolutely no resonance.

Regarding hp, I did some rough testing and found that I got about 4 or 5 hp, all at the higher rpms. This makes sense, because the impact of the restriction is minimal at low airflow. So if you don't drive much above 4500 rpms you don't get anything except maybe more sound. I've been meaning to do more rigorous testing but the prelim results will be close. I used a couple stretches of road, same rpm range, and recorded data with my DL1 data logger.
