Howdy,

Been stalking this site before I purchased this '97 Cab back in May. 51k miles today. Very happy - daily driver. CEL came on yesterday and the pucker factor was high, but I'll deal with that later...

I would like to upgrade my worn out shifter insert. I have the wood shifter and, through many searches, am rather confused. Can I pop out the worn out leather insert as described in other posts and replace with the etched aluminum insert from the UK?? Or is the wood shifter a different beast. And by the way I hope the picture below is of the wood shifter (rosewood??). The ebrake matches. Thanks for your help.

I don't think many people have this....that's why there are no responses. You could pull off the **** and look at the inside of it. That might give you a clue how the insert is attached.

Leather insert at the top does indeed come out. It's simply glued in place. Be careful with not damaging the wood around the insert while prying the cover out.

I had bad luck with getting OEM replacement top - for some reason replacement top cover was slightly smaller. So make sure to check dimensions of the replacement cover before buying one.

Good luck and please share the pictures of the end result!

Will do. Hopefully the smart looking UK insert will fit. Thanks again. Pictures to come...

There is a new factory rootwood shifter/boot assembly on ebay. It looks like it comes with a new insert. About $200 if I recall correctly. No affiliation, etc.
