Thanks for the review. It's a relief to know that my Conti SportContact 2's arent the worst tires I could have bought.

I like Kumos, $80 for front tires, $100 or so for rears, Z rated. 2 sets of tires a year makes price a consideration.

pcar64,
sorry you don't like the tires - at least you got a great deal on them! If you would have paid 700- for the set (as I did) you would have been really ticked!

No hard feelings. I think I might be able to swap the fronts for some slightly used Conti's from a used performance tire shop in Tampa. As for the rears, I'll try eBay and see what happens.

Careful with the generalizatrions - I believe that many believe Bridgestone's are great tires for the 993. Made in Japan.

Man, if they cost about $400 when new and even more so, the name is Sumitomo, what did you expect?!

I actually got them slightly used for $390 shipped, not a bad deal. They're around $700 new. Sumitomo is a relatively well-known jap brand, and most of the reviews on tirerack were positive. I didn't plan on using these on the track, just for daily driving. Needless to say, they were not what I expected, even for a bargain tire.

Hopefully eBay will help me sell the rears, otherwise I'll have two very expensive tire swings

Even though we sell them, I don't think they are the best choice for a high performance car. A Civic on 17's, maybe. On a Porsche - nope. Just because they look like a max performance tire doesn't mean they really are "MAX" performance when compared to other, more proven tires.

That's why I started this thread - as a public service announcement. While I had no illusions about the fact that these are a bargain tire, I at least expected something that would be usable in between trackdays (bought second set of wheels finally ). Now nobody on the 993 board has any excuse, you've been warned.

Now that I think about it, the only cars that really use 285/30-18s are Porsches (as far as I know), so I'll have to find someone on eBay who isn't a Rennlister

Damon, what would you consider a good street tire for a 993, if wet is not a big consideration? Compare and contrast your choise to Falken RT-615s, if you could.

I have a 2 sets of these sumitomo and a set of MSPC's, pretty scary going from the cups to sumitomo. I use the cups on the track and a little street and when switching to the sumitomo for the street they can feel a little hairy if driven hard, not cost effective if you crash. I don't completely hate these tires, but I don't recomend them, especially for the track, they do get greasy in little time.

pcar64,
I replaced these with contisportcontact II's and I think the difference is night and day. I absolutely love the contis (they are also 295's in the back)...very surprised to hear you compare the two...
