I like the Kumho MX's more and they're cheaper (even with the big discounts on the SO3's)...

I paid $152 a piece for 255/40R-17 for the rears and $144 a piece for 225/45R-17 for the fronts- Kumo ECSTA MX's at Discount Tire a year ago. MX's didnt (dont know if they do now) in 205/50-17 in the fronts. The S03's were $125 for the rears, $99 for the fronts.

Both are good tires and the MX's are really holding up well for 7000 miles on them.

Cosmetically, I like the look of the SO3's over the MX's. Performance wise for street, I really dont notice much of a difference.

Hey Mark, thanks for the post on this. Very timely as I am in need of treads. Just ordered up a pair of 225/45-17s and four 255/40-17s. The rears are shipping from IN. The fronts out of DE. The fronts are now listed as low stock so if anybody else is looking for the 225s order them soon. Since I had the better half prepared for $1K on my first tire purchase, Mark is now on our Christmas card list. Of course now I have no excuse but to take her out for dinner tonight. This is a great place.

Just arrived, my front tires! The rears must be coming from another warehouse.

My invoice said these tires would be YR rated, but the two fronts say ZR!

We will have to wait and see what the rears are rated at.

Thanks for the heads up!

Thanks for the tip Mark. I *just* bought new SO3's rears from TireRack two weeks ago....

So to even out the price I picked up a new set of the closeouts. I'm tire'd-up!

BTW - the SO3 do very well in the rain.

For those ordering, please make sure you order through the link at the top of the screen so Rennlist makes a portion of the sale. You are also welcome to call me direct or reference my name at the end of an online sale. Thanks.

Marv -

Check your service description on the tires. It will say 98Y, or 96Y....something like that. That is the true speed rating of the tire. Z and Y are listed on the sidewall. Y is higher, so is the actual rating.

They are being replaced with the RE050A Pole Position, which is incorporates all of their latest technology. It's a great tire.

Damon - Bridgestone seems to be adding more and more high performance tires to their line and yet does not seem to do a good job differentiating them. For example, why would one go for an SO2a vs the RE050A Pole Position, etc etc. Care to take a stab at the various models in the BS line and their relative pros and cons?

The PO had installed cheaper tires on my 993 - Daytona ZR tire by Dayton. I have to say they have been good tires. Tracked them twice and been driving them for 8000 miles. They are still quiet and plenty of tread after track days. I found out that Dayton is actually owned by Bridgestone and the tires are made in Japan. I understand that the the daytona line is now Fuzion which is being marketed for the ricer audience and sold at tire rack. Based on my experience with the daytonas, I will go bridgestone when these tires wear out (300 treadwear) so hopefully it will be awhile.

But I have to wonder, maybe Doug at TR can comment, how much technology transfer happens between the Fuzion and Bridgestone lines? Is it just marketing? If so, fuzion may be the value choice? Like I said I will go bridgestone when the time comes up, but I will have even a bigger smile on my face if the RE050A has even better performance than the Daytonas....
